Last night I was watching "Animal Planet;" My camera was nearby; so I pushed the pause button and took a dozen or so pictures. Many of them were really bad--but some came out
pretty good not "show" quality, but decent snapshots.
QUESTION: Whose pictures are they ? Should I write to the station for permission ? Could I exhibit them at the county fair ?
IF another person wanted a print, could I sell it ? Could I give it away ?

first why would you want to display something you took off the TV at a fair?

Second, I beleive (and I go be so very wrong on this) that the program you took the images from would be copy writed and as such you do not have permission to reproduce.

The Small Print. It's all in the Small Print. The next time you see a show ending, try to read that fine print that scrolls up the screen. I remember when I used to watch baseball, the announcer would say that it was illegal to record, etc. Somone other than yourself owns what you saw on TV, and only they have a right to do anything with it but record it for personal use and buy all the products being advertised. Except for unusual cases, you can't even show a DVD or a TV recording to the public without written permission. That's why the studios have been fighting home recording since the 1970's.

Hilarious! All right I understand you are 80 age. It is illegal to take the photos from TV for exhibiting at the county fair.

Basically, who's going to know? Live dangerously. Have fun. Do what you want. I won't tell anyone. If you don't open a web site or a store selling these, I don't see a problem.

argh... another "it's ok, just steal the image, no one will" mentaly. As a group of photographers (hobbist or professionals) it sickens me to see posts saying "just use it" when it's a blantant theif of an image. You have no right to use an image you took from a TV Program and enter it into a contast or showing as your own work or think of selling it for profit.

I think it would have taken care of itself. Who in their right mind would buy a low quality photo taken from the TV?

rfbccb, I think you should ask yourself, what is a "right mind" when you have a person paying 4 million dollars for a composed image of a gray sky, gray looking water, green grass, and a cement walkway? Here, you be the judge and look at it:

Its way against the law...and copyright issues are a hot button theses days due the internet.

If you have your heart set on it...call the channel and ask for permission, you might find someone in a good mood...if they didnt actually shoot the video...then THEY need permission to give you permission.

No insult meant to either artists or investors, but $4.3 million for this is insane.

Who said the person was going to do any of these things?
Let's not jump before we see where we are going to land. (sounds like a democrat) But seriously, maybe this was going to be some kind of fair showcasing a particular project, etc. The user may have been going to use the picture to make a point and give credit to the TV show. Certainly, they should ask for and get permission to use the picture they took, but let's not get crazy here folks.

I bolded the section of his first post were he states he wants to sell or display the image he took from a TV Program below for your reference, hard to jump to conclusions when he states it right out....

And every country fair I have been to, by displaying your pictures you are:
a:entrying the country fair photogrpahy contest or
b: displaying your images in a booth and offering them for sale.

Is there any other reason to display your images at a county fair?

Its a very slippery slope...in theory you cant record that program and take it to your mother in laws house...and I do agree with MVAC (lest I be the victim of a driveby)...do your own stuff...much more gratifying.
