I did rotate mine, but they still came out sideways. I'll keep trying though. I will be stayiny at Mammouth Hot Springs....how far is the place where you took the picture, and how much time should I allow to get there by sunrise?

If you are staying at the Mammoth Hotel, this is the top of the mountain as shot from a midpoint siding on the main road, 1/4 mile from the hotel at most. If you drive to the top there are boardwalk trails that allow you to go almost right out to the edge of the dropoff at the edge of the trees to the left in the shot.

Thanks. Can't afford the hotel, but am staying in one of the cabins there. I will research the trails on the NPS website to get an idea of logistics. On my 2 week trips out west, I am up at 4-5:00 a.m. each day, and have to go home to rest up. Funny that it's hard getting up with the dogs at 6:00 a.m. at home, but can be up at 4:00 out west to get a shot. :-)

Got to be the air. What cabins? In Gardiner?
The only cabins in Mammoth I know of are the Park Employees housing.

There are several differet cabin types at Mammoth Hot Springs, and I booked into what they call the Frontier Cabin. $125.00 a night plus tax, which translates to almost $150.00 a night....a bit over my budget, but I figure I am in the Park, and close to everything, rather than drivig 20 miles each way each day to stay outside the Park. They look to be two units to each "cabin" but all I wanted was a bed and bathroom. Won't be there but a few hours each day.

I just checked, and I saw those when they were being built and thought it was more employee housing. About the same as the hotel rooms, they are $123 plus tax, or $87 if you don't mind sharing a bath. Gardiner is only 4 miles from Mammoth, better rates and more dining choices.
I hope you have a great visit!

Thanks, I am sure I will enjoy evrything, although will only get a "taste" of Yellowstone on this trip. I think I might check out Gardiner for lodging, it's not too late to cancel my reservations if I find something better and there is no fee to cancel. Am planning on staying 2 nights at the cabins at Old Faithful (no bathroom), 2 nights at Canyon, and 2 nights in the north part of the park. How long would it take me to drive from Mammoth Hot Springs to the Eastern entrance? I have been told that the Lamar Valley (is that the one on the way to the East entrance?) has the wolves and lots of Bison. Would it be easier to take that drive to the east entrance when I am staying at the Canyon cabins?

The Lamar Valley is on the North loop, you would have to double back to tower and take Dunraven Pass down to Lake to get to the East entrance. The Lamar is best seen from a day trip out of Mammoth if you are spending 2 nights there anyway. (and Mammoth IS the North part of the park, unless you are going outside the park for a night or two to Cooke City or Silvergate. The only other accomodations inside the Park itself in that area would be Roosevelt Lodge at Tower Junction.) If you get a chance order a visitors package from the NPS site for Yellowstone, it will have a map and park info and I think they are still free. The map is a definite MUST have item. The main Park road is in a figure 8 shape with 5 side roads going off the main route to access the 5 park entrances, 3 in Montana and 2 in Wyoming.
I am sure you will have a nice trip.

I am sure that I am not getting the names right, I got a packet of info from AAA for Yellowstone, and the valley I want to see is on the way out of the north of the park going towards Cody. I looks to be a fairly long stretch from Tower, but was just wondering if it would be worth a whole day drivig from Mammoth across the whole North end of the park, or better to take a half day and "zip" up from canyon to Tower and then head east.

Cody is East of the park, not North. The Lamar Valley is famous for the big herds of Bison as well as its Big Horn Sheep populations. It is also where the original as well as subsequent wolf releases were made so is always the hot spot for wolves in the park.
The Lamar is on the North East entrance road which exits at Silvergate, MT and is 5 miles from Cooke City, MT. It leaves the loop road at Tower junction and heads NE from there. Cody is several miles outside the Park on the East entrance road which leaves the loop road at Lake Village. The Hayden Valley is a very nice place to see and is between Canyon and Lake Village on the loop road.
There really is not all that much to see between Mammoth and Tower, but an interesting side trip is the Blacktail Plateau road if its open. Its a one way dirt side road that goes back into prime Grizzly country.

Many thanks for your excellent directions and recommendations. Didn't have my map in front of me when I was typing. The NE entrance was the one I was referring to. I'm going to see as much as possible, but not drive myself crazy. It will give me an excuse to go back....maybe get a small pull-behind camper and drive from the east coast, staying longer.
