What plugin software for Lightroom 5.4?
As there are many on the market.
And because there are many you will get more than confused by asking a generic question like this one!!!

I was looking at this, and it looks interesting. It says it must not be placed under the ProgramFiles folder hierarchy.
Where does LR default to store plugins? I have none defined, and I cannot see a folder name anywhere in the preferences menus. Adobe stores stuff pertaining to LR all over the place! I have found a ton of LR folders, but none of them contain a plugins subfolder...

I use Nik and Topaz for general stuff, but my favorite would be On1 - it is better integrated with both LR and PS than any of the others.
http://www.on1.com/ Many of their videos show how you can do a great job with just On1 and LR - and bypass PS and it's learning curve. Fastest path to great results - no need to learn an non-intuitive masking process, luminosity masking, local color, tone and contrast enhancement, etc etc etc. You can do all of these things in PS, or you can do it in On1 and go out and take more pictures with all the extra time you'll have.
I am not saying you shouldn't learn Photoshop, but the plugins do get you there a whole lot faster.

I just started experimenting with On1 recently when they put it on sale for $90, with some bonus presets to download.
I think one of it's strengths is that although there are numerous presets, you can (if you choose) adjust or tweak the elements that make up the preset and change that preset's default settings, or rename your version as a new one. You can also work with layers, brushes, masking etc.
It also includes ReSize, which used to be Genuine Fractals. I used Genuine Fractals back when Nikon's top digital camera was 5 MP. Getting 16 x 20 prints was easy using the program. Today it will come in handy for those shooting lower res cameras (by comparison) like the Nikon D4s, or those who need to do heavy cropping due to not enough lens.
They currently have a 60 day free trial. After I had it for one day they started the sale. I was already convinced and bought it.
I am not affiliated with the company, just very impressed with the product.

If LR design anything like PShop, then open the application folder on the hard drive and you should find a sub folder named Plugins. Every individual plugin might be a different folder - it will go where the plugin creater wants it put, tho.

That's the problem... There are about 5 or 6 different application folders for LR, but I can't find a Plugins folder under any of them. I don't have any plugins defined (apparently), so maybe that is why... I just wondered if anyone knew where the default location is.

Actually it is quite different as far as plugins are concerned. LR is much more orderly.

Look for Manage Plugins in the File menu. If it is a plugin, and not a suite like On1, you can load it usign the Manage Plugins option. If it is an exe based suite, you can load it as an alternate processor. Each can be called by right clicking on the file in the Develop or Library module and selecting the Edit In option.
