We arrived at the Savannas Recreation Center campground in Florida Campground and spotted some very large birds that turned out to be Sandhill Cranes. The campers beside us said that the birds were very tame and visited the campgrounds daily. It was near dark, but be took some pictures of them anyway and planned to attempt to take some with better lighting before we left, but didn't follow through, but must post anyway, as these were on our bucket list!

These are really beautiful. I agree with Linda regarding the setting. It really shows these big guys at their best. They are frequently quite tame. A lot of them have been fed and are mooches.

Here in Florida we look forward to their arrival every year. They are wonderful birds to photograph and depending where you are it is possible to catch a whooping crane or two who sometimes mix in with the migrating sandhill flocks.

Thank you very much Linda and it was a beautiful 550 acres of what the American Birding Association's book "A
birder's Guide To Florida" describes as "an extensive area of fresh water marshes and wet prairie, a remnant of a system that once extended along much of Florida's Atlantic coast."

Erv, There were 34 great campsites, most with water electrical and sewage hookups on 550 acres with reasonable prices ,and is managed by the county. Phone # 1-800 789-5776. I called about one hour before they closed for the evening with almost no hope of getting in, and was pleasantly surprised and they are extremely friendly! Then not far from there is the 5100 Savannas preserve State Park, but we did not have time to go there.
Think you guys may need to check it these out!

I can sure see why you look forward to their arrival, g8rfan-- they are so beautiful and we could hear them calling to each other, and the next morning I saw several small flocks flying high overhead! Thanks for responding and take care!

Thanks Carol and about three were mooching next door, and that's where I later took the shots as they returned once more. Quite an experience that I hope I never forget!
Take care, and appreciate the info about the Monarchs!
