OK. So, I finally got the shutter count thing to work. Took a new photo, didn’t edit it, and uploaded it to two different shutter count websites. Both displayed “599”. Subtract the few shots I took since receiving the camera, something between 590 and 595 would have been the actual count, had I done it right the first time.

Sounds like a good deal! I have heard that you can expect 100,000 plus shutter actuations on a DSLR.

Actually, the shutters are rated for 150,000. Still, because some here have reported double- or single-digit shutter counts, one here even said his was “0”, I was hoping for a lower count. Still, I’ve also read that anything less than 2,000 shutter actuations is considered very good.

That's great. 600 clicks is nothing. My buddy has to get moving to catch up. Good luck and happy shooting. BTW, my friend bought a 2 year warranty for 20 bucks from Adorama.

My neighbor just got a Nikon refurbished D7100 a few days ago from Adorama. Cost $489. Number of clicks...a grand total of zero. Looks brand new. I have bought 3 refurbished lens directly from Canon. Couldn't be happier. Refurbs is the way to go if you are watching your pennies.

I should edit this. The count was 1, The one shot I look and uploaded.

$20? Worth it just for the peace of mind.

Just a quick update to this thread.

I did eventually get the refurbished D7200 directly from Nikon (from their flash sale) and it had a shutter count just short of 3000. That didn't bother me.

However, there is a fault with the power switch, whereby the top LCD randomly switches on while the camera is powered off.
Spoke to Nikon after Christmas who said to send it for repair.

The repair process timescales they quote mean I won't have the camera back for over a month.
This eats up much of the 90 day warranty, so I'm not that impressed at the moment.
If I just return and re-buy, not only do I pay shipping but Nikon won't honor the flash sale price.

Next time I'll stick with Adorama, B&H or Cameta.

I would expect that buying directly from Nikon, though maybe not the best price, would be a safe bet in terms of support. I would also expect that if their turnaround time for repair, as you stated, “eats up much of the 90-day warranty”, that because it is no fault of your own and just their own turnaround time, that they would tack on the extra time so that you don’t lose it. I don’t know. I’d check with them.

I bought my refurb D7100 from Adorama. I snapped a few test photos when I got it in order to upload a photo to check the shutter count, and it showed about 600, give or take.

I also have a refurbished Canon sx50 purchased from their site. The warranty is one year, same as new. The camera was pristine.

From Canon? Or from an online seller?

A Manufacturer Refurbished camera should be as good, and maybe better than, new. Sometimes they correct a problem that has been an issue with most all the new ones.

What I’ve read is that whereas a normal “new” camera goes through a random check off the assembly line, so only one out of every so many cameras gets a once-over, that with a factory refurb, EVERY camera goes through a through check and evaluation so your refurb is actually better because of that individual checkout that your “new” one which may not have had that.

Good point, Nikon said the repaired item (power switch) would be covered for 6 months, but not the rest of the camera. I will contact them again and ask if they will add the repair time to the remaining warranty

IMHO Nikon refurbs are better than new. I have had four snd each came in new condition and the three I still have still work fine.

They come with 90-day Nikon warranty and Cameta adds a year of theirs for free. Adorama for a few bucks.

Interesting that you say that. I bought my D7100 refurb on Amazon, just before Thanksgiving. The seller was Adorama, so it was sold with only the standard 90-day warranty, same as if I had bought it from Nikon.

You say “Adorama for a few bucks”, yet when I contacted Adorama, I was told that extended warranties were available only for new products and that I should talk to Amazon. Amazon told me the same thing, but also that I should talk to Adorama. Seems that both were pointing the finger at the other.

Most here in UHH said that I shouldn’t worry about it as chance are likely that the warranty won’t be needed at all. Still, I thought the responses from both Amazon and Adorama were strange.

Mine came with just under 600. I had read, here on UHH, that anything under 2000 is considered very good.
