I just completed a brief photo shoot and my subject told me, "Your camera takes such good pictures." Perhaps I should have just sent the camera? At least she was happy with the results, but perhaps I should have just sent the camera on its own - after all, it did all the work.
I know this has been discussed before - just had to vent!

Without reading the replies, I tend to agree with your subject. A good camera and a good lens take better pictures that inferior equipment. Of course the gear needs an operator, but that's understood. A good photographer takes better pictures than an inferior one.

As a skydiver I've had many people ask me: What if your parachute doesn't open, as if that is almost certain to happen?

Your reply: "Suppose you step on the brake pedal, and the car doesn't stop?"

Allie, maybe your delivery is not very good!! It's wonderful and important that that they really like the results, which you say they did. Maybe your delivery and engagement needs to improve or needs to change. It's not enough to just do good photography. You need to sell yourself as well.
I know far to many photographers that do great work but are they themselves duds!!
You and your work need to be equals. Just my opinion!! ;-)

I don't mind comments like that. I smile big time and agree. I'm proud of the equipment I paid thousands for!

Whether it's you or the camera or both, the important thing is that they recognize that you get better results than they do. Next time instead of looking for someone who's better with an iPhone, they'll want you with your professional equipment. That's repeat engagements and it's all good! :)

As long as she pays you well enough that's fine. By saying so she meant to pay you for the use of your expensive equipment that she doesn't have.

I think we read so much in what other people comment that it may get out of hand. I know a comment like that can be irritating. I would just try to let it go. I think the person may have been complementing you and your camera. It just didn't come out that way. This person may have had a bad experience with someone who was suppose to take great pictures and didn't. It may have been noticed at the time that the person taking the pictures seem to have poor equipment. So again I think the best thing to do with comments like that is to just let them go and not read so much into it.

Just say "thank you, and Horowitz had a great piano, DaVinci great brushes and Michelangelo a great chisel."

Horowitz was a big pain in the ass because he was so picky about the piano he used. If it was not up to his standards he would just not play. Even house painters use very good brushes and I'm sure that Michelangelo used great chisels. All skilled workman use the best tools for the job. - Dave

Why didn't you just say, "Nah, it's the person behind the camera that makes the difference". And give her a little wink. I would have.

Most people try to be complimentary...but sometimes misdirect their compliment, which appears to be what happened in your case. If we all had time to create our verbal narrative before we speak...our complements would be more appropriate and specific. I would take the obvious compliment, recompose the intent before it hit my memory bank, and be appreciative of the positive response. I think that is what most of us do, since we essentially are "the camera".

She most certainly does have good stove if you really like her food.
