Yes - the cameras are not the same size or layout for access to the ports on the side.

Are you talking about an L- bracket or a battery grip?
Those are two different things.
L- bracket... maybe so. Most are pretty generic.
Battery grip... no.

Actually they are anything but generic. If you look at manufactures of the brackets they lift a very many. I am sure that you can find a universal application.

I want mine to be full function and be able to change batteries with out removing the bracket.

You are correct- some of the expensive ones are model-specific.
I have a really nice Digital Pro E model that will take a lot of camera models.
There are hundreds of budget models out there that are not model specific.
Only the OP knows what he has.
I may be wrong, but my take is, if he's asking the question, I'm guessing he probably does not have an expensive, model-specific bracket.

I have used this $25 L-grip bracket on three different Nikon APS-C bodies, and now on my Nikon D800.

This is what I believe an L to be Doug is coming from the Macro Forum.

GoofyNewfie the problem with cheap imports is the they most times only sort of fit. The Kirk is 135 USD. It is very well made an all option work with it in place and with out removing.

Depends on the type of l-bracket you are talking about. One similar to what nikonian72 has illustrated for flash or one similar to this that is model specific for mounting on a tripod which is model specific.

Get the body and try out the bracket you already have. If it works great - if not find a new one.

That's not the L-bracket that the OP describes.

I suspect that what you are looking for in a "L" bracket is to be able to quickly switch from portrait to landscape. The best for that is probably RRS while a good quality less expensive one might be had from Sunwayfoto. B&H shows one from Sunwayfoto for $70. made for the D750.

How do you know that? The op did not describe it.

It is an L-Bracket not a L-Grip. Unless the OP misused the term. If you want to look up L-Bracket - these are the images you will get.
