I did Dyno testing for the last 30 years. It really sounds cool if you are in the room when the secondaries kick in.

Some engines we ran without filters and only a velocity stack, because we could not get enough air to them. The room air was filtered anyway.

Modern F. I. engines make way more power with their stock tuned intake systems with plenum chambers.

But that was another life...

And in many ways, a better life. Cars were different - and fun. Yes, I realize we have better electronics, safety, and convenience features, but modern cars lack personality. And, of course, there's not much tinkering you can do with an engine. Given a choice between my '65 427 and a modern car - no choice - give me modern.

I always tell people we make the best cars ever right now. Then I tell them to go buy a new American car. I worked on engine product development for the big 3. The modern engines really improved year after year.

My personal favorite is the Ford 4.6L. A fantastic reliable engine. Our lab got them new by the truck load for head gasket testing. Ford wanted a non stick single layer steel head gasket. Not easy, but we did it. It took 10 years.

Just removed a Quantaray (sp) neutral filter from my Nikon 18-55 lens. Took a few shots and man what a difference! Would not have thought about doing that if it were not for this list.

Anything by "Quantaray" will degrade your images. It is the Wolf/Ritz house brand and is the lowest possible quality. I used to work for Wolf and always would talk people out of buying that garbage and go for something better quality. "Craparay" is more descriptive.

And I thought that term was reserved for the ProMaster, we used to call them CrapMaster around here too.

OH Yeah...as a very general statement, avoid ANYTHING with the word "Pro" in the name/label/model. Not 100% accurate, but it should cause more than a little skepticism.

I know what you mean by the name pro. There is a college professor that owes me money.

Many many years ago when I was first starting out in photography, I ask an old pro photographer what filter should I put on my new $1000.00 lens. His reply was, why would I spend a $1000.00 on a lens and then put a cheap piece of glass in front of it. Since then I have never put any filter on my lens unless absolutely needed for some type of special effect eg. neutral density. Just my thoughts.

I loved that sound. That was a real sound of power. I had a '65 427 Ford with 2 4-barrels. That had a great sound, but the exhaust was stock and quiet. The solid lifters were noisy, though.

A friend of mine way back, had a 1964 Galaxy 500, 427c.i. side-oiler, w/ 2X4, 4-speed. I used to turn the wrenches on it.
One of the quickest cars I was ever in. Lot of aluminum in that little beauty..

This is just one more reason why I love this forum. I think I've learned more since I've been on it than I ever have before.

Speaking of filters, how many of you remember the "Toilet paper oil filters" for cars that came out in the 50s and 60s? My uncle had one on his 57 Plymouth Belvedere with a 318. All you had to do to replace it was unscrew the top cover, remove the old one and replace with a new one.

Since we're talking cars now, when I was in high school, I had a 1965 Plymouth Satellite. Had a 361 putting out 335 HP. It was the second fastest car in school. The only one faster was a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner driven by Larry Crisman, the son of Jack Crisman, drag racer. Jack drove the Sidewinder. Larrys car could actually pop wheelies.

Just another GOOD reason NOT to use filters ( to protect ) - use a metal lenshood !

We did that in the 60's to make that cool rushing of vacuum noise on a 4 barrel V-8.

Better than a loud exhaust...

Filters are just bad all around. I removed them from all my cars as a result of all the filter bashing on this forum. So far, so good.

all you had to do was flip the air filter cover over and not take the filter out, used to do that on my friend's moms 69 impala...
