No movies

Every great-sounding new camera seems to be loaded up with video stuff. I, for one, don't want to shoot movies (video), but only stills. All that video stuff takes up room inside the camera and costs an arm and a leg.

Can anyone suggest a digital/still camera, with or without extra lenses, that has all the fire power that's available nowadays? My poor, old eyes need auto-focus, my even older and withered brain doesn't like to make too many decisions so I need auto-exposure, quick bursts, zoom capability...you know, all the good stuff a former 35mm can capture.

Any and all help here will be greatly appreciated.

As far as dSLRs, I don't think the entry-level Nikon (D3000) has video. Depending on your budget, you might be able to find a decent used camera without it.

I'd start by looking at the company websites and look through the specifications.

trying to find a dslr without video is like trying to find a family sedan with a stick shift. not gonna happen.it is a very popular feature and is mostly software it does not add to the cost of the camera.simply DON'T USE THE FEATURES YOU DON'T LIKE. that video feature is keeping the cost of the camera down as it sells! more volume less cost per unit.

I have the Nikon D3000 and it fits your requirements precisely. You ought to be able to find a good used one for a reasonable price. Check with the retailers which get the best marks from your fellow Hogs and then start shooting!

One camera that I own, an older model now - at least by technology standards, is the Canon Rebel XS (1000D). It's a 10mp camera and does great still work with no video capability. The last time I looked it was selling for about
$400 new with a kit lens. It takes all of Canon's EF and
EF-S lenses and serves me very well for just doing stills.

Good Luck

Hi John, You may wish to consider the Nikon D3100. it's the newer model of the D3000. It "does" have video but has a much improved menu system over the 3000. I have it and I shoot very few videos too, but don't knock the video till you try it. The camera has many different automatic and scene modes. It also has a "guide" mode that explains all the different settings and gets you shooting great pictures fast. The factory kit lens, a 18-55mmVR, is quite clear. Stop by a "real" camera store and check one out. You'll love it.

If you aren't interested in changing lenses, check out the 'bridge' cameras like the Nikon P510 or Canon SX40hs. They have super-zoom lenses built on so that you don't need to change and they both do a great job without have the extra lenses to carry around.
