Thanks for the replies, I went back to the bidding history and my bid is not there so I likely failed to hit confirm or just didn't get to it on time. Funny thing is the bid window dissapeared and my screen went back to the last few seconds of the auction then on to the "sorry you missed out' routine.
Bob, if you don't use paypal, how do you pay?

Again, thanks to all.

The solution is to place a maximum bid amount around 15 seconds or earlier before bidding ends. Maximum bids will automatically and incrementally do the bidding for you. Standard eBay procedure for years.

It's called "sniping", there are even App's you can get to do it for you. MOST bids happen in the last 10 seconds.
Also, you have not bid unless you "confirm".

Right. You can pay sniping services to make a bid in the last couple of seconds. I'd like to see what happens when two sniping services duke it out. :D

PAY for a "sniping" service? Really? Gee, all you need do is enter the maximum you want to pay and EBAY keeps incrementing your bid till it is either over and you win or until you hit your maximum.

One thing I came to realize, if you miss out on something on Ebay, there will usually be more of the same easily found again later ;)

What exactly do you have against PayPal ( aside from seller fees) that warrants a "less than honorable institution" rating? I have no afiliation with them, but my experience with PayPal (and eBay) has been rock solid as a buyer for 13 years. PayPal protects and reimburses most buyers from unscrupulous sellers as a standard practice for up to 90 days (might even be 180) after purchase. eBay does the same thing for up to 30 days. I just received a full refund from eBay - including shipping - due to a no- show item I paid for. First time it happened, but my money was returned very fast after an initial waiting period of about 10 days. PayPal operates under the same premise.

That's what I usually do. I'll often place my bid and not even check back till near the end. Of course, if I am out-bid, I get an email from ebay. Then I have to decide if I want to bid higher.

What would you do if the seller cashed your check, then shipped an empty box ....

A couple of possible scenarios and an opinion.

Possible: To answer your question, there was probably someone who bid higher than you within the last few seconds the item was open for bid. That $193 was probably the next highest acceptable amount. The person who outbid you was awarded the item for that amount.

Opinion:
Whenever I've bid on anything on ebay, my first question is how much am I willing to pay for that item? That's what I bid right out of the box, regardless of the amount of time left on the clock. If I win it, great. If not, too bad.

I've seen many items purchased, in the bidding frenzy, for more than the street value of said item.

Additionally, you're up against people who are using software to bid. Yeah, these apps skirt the system as it was planned by ebay. This is why I tend to purchase those items with a fair "Buy it Now" price. Additionally, I won't deal with anyone who requires that I pay through Paypal. Paypal is a less than honourable institution.

Your paypal comment... absolutely correct, "less than honorable."
My experience with paypal was really bad, dishonest on their part, and probably illegal. If you're using them, lookout! They're poison.

I'd like to know also. Have used PP for years without any problems.

There is an auction house near me that has on-line auctions every weekend. What they do to get around the sniping issue is to extend an auction close by two minutes after the latest bid is placed. Gives others a chance to still bid on an item.

Each to his own. I'd rather use PP, which I have many times as buyer (hair brushes) and also vendor with no issues, than send my banking info on a cheque including my account number, branch, and name, to someone who knows where. Actually a vendor who doesn't take PP gives me more pause as possibly they couldn't get verified.

As a buyer, no problem with PP as a seller, I love PP, instant money in my account, no going to bank etc. Been using eBay since 1999 and PP almost since its inception.
