I was watching an item on ebay that had a current bid of $160, with 15 seconds left I bid $265. My screen said "current bid $160 you bid $265". A few seconds later it said "ended"and the item went for $193 to somebody else.
What am I missing?

Well, this thread is going the way of the Nikon / Canon which is better path. We have those who love paypal and those who think their scum.

Time to believe what you will.

I see. I never saw that. Did you turn this over to the authorities for prosecution? Obviously writing bad checks is illegal, I would think this would be also, possibly bank fraud?

It was all of the above. I turned it in, and because the crooks hide behind an IP address, or that's what it amounts to, they don't have the know how to find these crooks.

And I might add that the IRS is having a huge problem with false returns or identity theft returns also.

They do Cashiers checks the same way. It took the bank 8 days to call me and tell me that the check was no good.

The Cops can't do alot because tracing internet thieves is incredibly hard to do. And this wasn't through ebay, although it could have been! If the crook made a phoney ebay account, and did this, the cops are at odds as to how to trace crooks over IP addresses. And ebay would be in the same boat! So the crook makes up a new name & ebay account, so what. Thats what they do.

This was an expensive hit, for me. As a result , I won't take any, cashiers-money order- whatever you have check, on ebay.

Anyone listening could be burnt the same way by accepting any type of money order/ cashiers check, but not with Pay Pal ! They deal with bank routing numbers!!! Alot easier to work with.

I only do paypal because bank routing numbers are alot easier to trace!

Sorry for your bad experience. As a seller, I can totally relate to your frustration.

Thanks for that.

I really do worry about the seller's here and those sellers who insist on money orders, cashiers checks, Postal MO's or the like, especially because they don't like Pay Pal.

Thieves hide behind an IP address. They'll send you a fabricated forged counterfeit check. It takes at least a week for the bank to give you the OK, unless you have some sort of "In" at the bank. And the authorities haven't cracked the IP crook code yet.

Pay Pal may not be perfect, but you won't run into this problem there. I've never had a problem with them, and they've helped me many times.

Do not send the product until the money clears or you know you can trust the buyer. There are buyers (like me) who have a perfect record. Thank goodness for the honest folks.

I've lost more money than I care to admit to. I just don't want to see others lose to forged counterfeit checks, MO's or Cashiers checks!

Got it. I never worried too much about these things because I NEVER had a problem. Even though I hate paying paypal fees, considering they are an arm of ebay, and although convenient, I hate getting hit twice for the same transaction, let alone paying a percentage of the shipping costs people send me twice which REALLY burns me. The cost of doing business......

I hear you there!

Pal Pal & Ebay are now separate but still take you two ways of fee's. But look at it this way, it beats the fleecing ya'd get with a storefront.
