Maybe try a Nikon remote as well? Something should surface. Some really nice prices on the D7100 bodies and maybe some refurbished too.

Treat yourself and get the holy trinity all at once $7,500 and you too can get a divorce.

My journey has been quite similar. Got the Nikon P/S L-810 when my 1st G-daughter came along. Bought the 5100 a little over a year later when #2 arrived. Bought the 18-105 to replace the 18-55..... The 50mm (or the 35) is on the 'get' list along with the 18-300..... I've used several name brand SD cards w/ no issues... Currently use the latest H-speed Sony's.... I'll try your cleaning method but a 7100 would be sooo much better......... :) :)

If your auto focus priority is set Focus /not Release/ and you are using remote control camera is not focusing and does not shot when you have to use back button for focusing, in Live View camera shooting but not focusing.

I followed these steps
Menu
Custom Menu Settings
Autofocus
AF-C priority selection
Switched from the 'Focus' to the 'Release' mode
The 1st time I tried Live View afterwards, it worked! However, the 2nd time I got the "Error, press shutter release" message again. I tried going through the process several more times & still got the error message. Now I'm really confused!

Looking at a 7100 or 7200 for my next body. What has your overall experience been like? Q-tips and alcohol for the contacts? Did cleaning them help?

I went to a D7200 from the D5200. You won't regret it if you follow me down that path. The only thing you will miss is the vari-angle screen. Get the highest speed SD card you can afford and it will almost never buffer out. Good luck.

Try a different lens, just to make sure it is not the contacts.
