'Live View' Problem.......

I shoot with a Nikon D5100 & a 18-105mm lens. I use Live View quite a bit. I shoot in 'M' (manual) mode using auto bracketing (from 1.0 to 2.0) in 3 shot burst mode using a remote release frequently. Most of these shots are from a tripod. About 3-4 days ago I started getting a "Error, press shutter release" message on the monitor. After a few tries I got the Live View screen. This got progressively worse. Now I just get the error message. I've tried different lenses & a fresh battery. No help.... The mirror is going into lock-up mode when I get the error message. It always releases when I press the shutter button. I used a cable remote release for a year with no problems. I recently got a wireless remote release (made by Altura) My Live View problems started about the same time although I don't really see cause and effect here. I'm trying to exhaust all other options before sending it off..... HELP!

For grins and giggles go back to the cable release that you used to begin with. Like you, I can't see your release making the difference, but since the problem began when you "upgraded" why not begin there?

I agree, try the 'old fashioned' way - to start.

Then, reset your camera to factory specs. Not sure how ya do that, though.

Could you have set your camera to some sort of 'self timer' mode - where the camera 'pauses' for a few seconds from when press the shutter (or the remote release device) before the shutter actually releases?

Good luck!

Are you using back button focusing?

I am having similar issues with my D7100. Tried cleaning the lens contact points (lens & camera) and now have changed my 'scandisk' card. If that does not work my camera is going back to Nikon.

I use it for wildlife shots and such but do not currently have it enabled.... How might this affect the Live View?

Looking at a 7100 or 7200 for my next body. What has your overall experience been like? Q-tips and alcohol for the contacts? Did cleaning them help?

No delayed release set.... Reset to factory specs using the Menu / Info buttons + 3 sec. method.... no help. Looks like I'm heading for the repair shop.....

It is better but not 100% solved. I used alcohol and a micro fiber cloth. Found the suggestion on the Internet. The new 'scandisk' is in and we will see what happens. I will be using the camera quite a bit over the next couple of days with grandchildren visiting. I love my D7100, my first DSLR. Been quite a learning curve from a high end point & shoot Canon S3 IS, an older version of the now Canon SX50-60 Series. I have the 18-140MM f3.5-5.6, 50MM f1.8 and an SB700 Speedlight. My main focus has been candids of our grandchildren with & without flash. Pretty steep learning curve for an old goat
Darrell Young's Book Mastering the D7100 is excellent in combination with the owners manual. He has a D7200 Version as well.

If your auto focus priority is set Focus /not Release/ and you are using remote control camera is not focusing and does not shot when you have to use back button for focusing, in Live View camera shooting but not focusing.

My journey has been quite similar. Got the Nikon P/S L-810 when my 1st G-daughter came along. Bought the 5100 a little over a year later when #2 arrived. Bought the 18-105 to replace the 18-55..... The 50mm (or the 35) is on the 'get' list along with the 18-300..... I've used several name brand SD cards w/ no issues... Currently use the latest H-speed Sony's.... I'll try your cleaning method but a 7100 would be sooo much better......... :) :)
