I don't get out to do this much....so I set up in my front yard and shot over the small city of Spartanburg SC. If anyone wants the calibrated and registered data to try their hand at processing this image. Let me know.

I am guilty of over processing. I stack and register in PixInsight. I use the Dynamic Crop, DBE (background extractor), Color Balance, Hystrogram Transformation (Stretch), and Curves while there. Then I head to photoshop....use Nik software and Topaz Denoise for final touches and this is where I make my over processing errors. I mean't to add, thanks for the kind words.

How many shots did you stack and what are the details of your singles? I am trying to figure out what length of lens to use and how long to expose so that the disk is pulled out of the haze. I appear to just be starting to get into range with my latest but I am concerned I am using to much length.

Not too sure I am answering your question about "singles" but I took 60 subs/Lights - 120 second exposure at ISO 1600, 100 flats, 30 darks and bias frames. I used PixInsight to register and calibrate. DeepSkyStacker does just a good.....PixI is a faster. I would like to use 100 darks, 100 bias, and 100 flats with 100 lights but this bloody camera has 45mg raw files and the processing time is 6 hours. Flats are by far the most important support file for my DSLR's (not all cameras).

Singles = lights in my mind. They are all a series of single shots. I know that the dark and the bias shots are done differently and I have been doing a better job of remembering to shoot them lately.
What I was wondering though was what length of lens or telescope did you use for this and is it from a shorter lens than 750mm I used on my most recent shot? How much did you have to crop to get here? If you didn't have to crop much, what length did you use? The star pin flares look like a Newtonian scope to me.
Thanks again,
Jim

I used a Vixen 81EDs refractor - 640 mm, F/7.6. I use the Dynamic Crop feature in PixInsight before I do anything else..... and I can't remember if I cropped again in PS.

Forgot one part of your question. The diffraction spikes were added in PS. I cropped the edges just enough to rid the image of edge gradients.

Your 750mm is a very suitable focal length for Andromda. It should compose well. I have used a Nikon F/4 200x400 lens at 400 and find that a perfect focal length.
