If you are thinking of taking the Mac with you while travelling, it's too big and heavy. I use a 13", smaller, lighter and does everything I need with LR6 etc

I have this same system, and it's fantastic for sports photography when you have to travel. The small hard drive can be gotten around by using external hard drives to store pictures. Most pros seem to have Apple Macbooks. If you don't need to haul the computer around, the very best for photography, IMHO, is the 27" Imac. The big screen is fantastic for photo editing.

One caveat: If you are a lifetime PC user, the transition to Mac can be a bit daunting.

Is this a good system to have:
MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel i7 with Retina Display
15.4-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2880-by-1800 resolution at 220 pixels per inch
16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory
256GB PCIe-based flash storage1
720p FaceTime HD Camera
Intel Iris Pro Graphics

It is a refurb from the apple site.

I've only ever used PC's, but I've heard so much about Apple being better for photography editing.

Thoughts?

See if you can get the 1TB SSD card. You will not be sorry.

Well that is about what i have for travel and it is excellent; Storage on your proposed is a little light at 256 (I have about 750, I think) and my processor runs at 2.8

Since I have gone "all Apple" the last few years, I don't keep up on PC's; I would not worry so much about storage as when we travel, I use a pair of WD My Passport Pro external hard drives that are 2TB each with thunderbolt connections. I keep all my photos one of the external drives and back up to the other one. my internal drive is just for programs. Photos in LR and PS pop up nice and fast and works well.

I shot a 7 shot panorama with the new Canon 5DSR with 50 mp and merged it in PS to make a photo that was over 850 MB.. Pretty crazy, but the thunderbolt is so fast that it comes up in LR quickly. You will love the retina display.

I wouldn't do it. You are used to being on a PC for how many years? It's quite a change jumping over to a Mac. You'll find that they do things different enough that you'll be struggling with a lot of small things that are second nature on a PC. Notice that they use the same processor that PC's use? It isn't faster than a PC like many people claim. It's just that the operating system isn't bogged down with as much code as a PC making certain operations faster - but not all operations.

Thanks for all the replies.

I ordered a refurbed MacBook Pro with 16GB ram, 1TB HD, and a 512MB graphics card with 1GB GDDR5. I think this little system will do me fine :D

I have the same system on a 15" MacBook Pro Retina display and thoroughly love it. I recently purchased a backpack that will carry my cameral equipment as well as my laptop. Sure does make it easy to carry around. Also use several thumb drives to use as a backup for any photos I may take on my trips. Then of course, when I get home I do an immediate backup on the time machine and another hard drive which is used for photos only.

I used a PC 25+ years and was in charge of media and computers in a school. I switched to a Mac had a couple of lessons and the rest is history. I'd never go back to a PC.

I have the same system. I use 2 2T external drives to save my captures just because I move around a lot. About $100 ea at Costco. With Photoshop and Lightroom, works like a charm.

What it is missing is an optical drive for loading from CD/DVD s and burning disks.

VERY easy and inexpensive to get an external one with the advantage that you don't have to carry it around with you all the time. Anything that needs to be copied can, and should for safety sake, be offloaded to an external drive or NAS system. Other than that, those small USB drives can be used for everything else!

Got a new MacBook Pro with Retina display recently and I love it.But I found the display not to be as accurate as I wanted and a little small. So l ended up with a 31 inch NEC monitor to do my editing on. Seemed like the best way to go for me. You will love your new MacBook.

Get a stand-alone monitor to plug into the MacBook Pro plus an external keyboard when you're working at home, and then just take the computer itself while you're away and it's the best of both worlds. The Retina displays are fabulous, but be sure to upgrade your memory before you purchase because the latest model MacBook Pros cannot be upgraded after the fact.

If you live close to an Apple store, you can get great support at the Genius Bars. I once went there with a really knotty problem and they took all the time they needed to fix it, for free!
