Twice for one specific Sigma lens, once for a Canon lens and once for a Canon body. In addition I had a Sigma lens calibrated, so that adds up to five events. Remember Sigma and Tamron warranties are for 4 years and provide much more long term owner protection than Nikon and Canon warranties.
3 times in 6mos with my Canon 7D2-it ended up being one of the batch that had a bad mirror box. After the AF problems finally were fixed, I had the nameplate on the top of the mode selector knob fall off. While it was irritating to have to deal with these issues after dropping $1800, I was sure glad for the warranty-and the piece of mind knowing that there would be NO questions about it.
And forgot to mention that my Tamron 150-600 had to go back for a firmware upgrade and calibration-that was within the first 2mos of owning the lens.

You had the top plate of the Canon 7D2 mode dial fall off? I checked and while its apparently a rare occurrence, it has also happened to owners of various Canon models, including some 5D III and 6D bodies
Zero times since 2007. I guess my olympuses are work horses.

I did not know that lenses have firmware.

That final problem was almost the straw that broke the camel's back. The past 3mos have been great-nothing has fallen off and the AF system is great. This camera nearly caused me to throw in the towel on Canon products. Thank God my trusty 70D and lenses kept me occupied enough to not give up hope.

In over 35 years of Nikon use I have never needed service while the camera or lens was still under warranty.
However, when I first purchased a D70 without realizing it was gray market, I was disappointed to find that I could not get support for a minor software issue. The small amount I saved was not worth it and I have since then gladly paid the U.S. price.

Are you buying extended warranty?
I never buy an extended warranty on anything (cameras, cars, refrigerators, etc.). If it does not fail during the warranty period it is probably going to continue performing well as long as I don't abuse it. Third party warranties are usually a rip-off.

Never!!
And with Canon, after a year, it doesn't matter if it's grey market or not! ;-)

That is often true.
I got an extended warranty with my last camera because I use the crap out of it, shoot in the pouring rain and travel a lot with them. And the warranty covers even if I decide to drop-kick it into the ocean!!!
Today's 3rd party warranties cover a h*ll of a lot more than just an extension. They are NOT your Fathers Oldsmobile!!! That's how they are able to sell them! ;-)

Never. However that does not preclude the need for such a service in the future.

Why don't you quit beating the dead horse? If you want to buy grey market, just do it! Put your big boy pants on and make your own decision.
