Thanks for the responce. So, with the Minolta lens, can I set the camera to Pre-flash TTL instead of ADI flash control for the Minolta glass. Those are my two choices on the A99.

Bill, the ADI option should be grayed out if you don't have a "D" lens. The so-called Restyled lenses did include distance encoding, and after 1993-94 as an option, certain AF lenses offered that feature as well. After the merger with Konica was complete all Konica Minolta "professional" lenses offered distance encoding.

If your lens has 5 contact pins, it is not a "D" lens and ADI is not available. If on the other hand it has 8 pins, it's good to go.

Your camera will automatically shift to Pre-flash TTL since the lens is incapable of sending distance to image information for flash calculations. TTL works great with this lens... but ADI is a superior system in certain situations.

No, because neither of the Minolta 50/1.4s are "D" type lenses which is to say that they don't pass focus distance inf back to the camera.

ADI is one of those apparently nice things to have but which is of limited use in real life. It works well with a Pop-Up flash and for an on camera flash pointed forward, a situation in which I rarely find myself. ADI doesn't work if you bounce the flash (the camera automatically reverts to TTL), when you have the flash off camera (cable or wireless), if you are using any sort of flash modifier or filter (even the wide panel).

Yep... very nicely explained. I should have read your post before giving my previous reply.

ADI is invaluable with highly reflective or bright backgrounds. It gets exposure right every time in situations where TTL tends to struggle or miss.

Still, the limitations you've listed are important.

If it is a KM lens, it is the updated version.

The optics and gearing are identical. The barrel, finish, and chip are different however... but the performance is identical.

I have the Minolta 50mm F1.7 and the Minolta Rokkor 50mm F1.4. The Rokkor version is the MC mount, manual focus, manual everything, and I have the adapter to use with my Sony A6000. The F1.7 lens is AF and in A-mount. I can use it on my A-mount bodies or the A6000 with a different adapter.

The Rokkor is the sharper of the two lenses by far.

ROKKORS were some of the BEST lenses ever made. Just EXCELLENT image quality.

You have NO idea how much I regret selling all my old gear. :(

I have been using Sony cameras for a few years now along with my Nikon equipment. Just got a Mint Minolta 50mm f1.4 from Japan on e bay. Wow, the lens blew me away with its sharpness. It is amazing that a lens made in 1989 works with no problems on my A99 Sony. I have been shooting the large Minolta's, 600 f4, 400 f4.5 and 300 2.8. But the new 50 f1.4 mint condition with built in lens hood and those beautiful Minolta colors all for $125.00. Talk about a Gas attack. Thanks to all of you that suggested Minolta lenses.

Congratulations on your find. I just upgraded to a Canon 6D and my favorite 50mm f/1.4 is still the M42 mount Pentax with an adapter on it. :)

Lucky you! Sounds like a great lens for a super price. I know you will enjoy using it.

My new lens, Minolta 50mm f1.4 AF is working fine on the HVL-F60M flash and I am happy to report it is working great in ADI and Pre-flash TTL. I have varied the distances and lighting conditions. I am very pleased that the TTL system is working great with my 30 year old Minolta lens. Many thanks for all of the comments.

Yes, Maxxum was branding for the US market.

ADI can't work with this lens; the camera is automatically switching to TTL.

I shot a Sony A99 for a while (GREAT camera and camera system, by the way), and was able to borrow a colleague's Minolta 50 f1.4 for a weekend to shoot with last year. In a word, OUTSTANDING lens for colors, sharpness and depth of field. It is one of my favorite lenses that I have ever shot with on any camera. I never liked the Minolta Maxxum bodies because they were so unreliable, but they were a very innovative company. The glass was always exceptional. At $125, for a good-shape lens, you'll have a jewel to shoot with for the rest of your life. Congratulations and enjoy your new find!

That's very odd; I used the same 9000AF (branded Maxxum 9000 in the States) from 1986 until it was stolen in 2008/9; never had a problem.

Cholly, I'm a hoarder, I never sell anything, well hardly ever, I'm trying to mend my ways.

When Minolta introduced AF in 1985, I did what many others did and bought into the system and my SR mount lenses simply sat around gathering dust for 40 years until wonder of wonders the NEX and then A7* lines came along. Who'da thought it!! I couldn't be happier!! Well, I could be 40 years younger but that's not going to happen.

Yes, It makes me ponder getting some additional Rokkor lenses. I don't really need them as I have no gaps in my lens coverage. But that 50mm Rokkor lens is just so much fun to use. The image quality is so good.

When I put it on my A6000 and manually focus using focus peaking, it is just so smooth and the focus point just seems to be so easy to find. And if I want to be even more precise, I just turn on the focus magnifier, and I can really nail it.

The lenses of that era were just such mechanical marvels. It is just not the same with the manual focus on the more modern lenses where AF is expected, and the focus ring is almost an after thought.

I have retired my Minolta 50mm 1.7 lens. I love the Sony 50mm 1.4 lens. It is really good with 13mm extention tube. BTY, I am not selling the 1.7 for sentimental reasons and emotions.
