Ditto on Indesign - it is great, I use it to make up to 300 page books for our company, which includes photos, PDFs, and text from word.

You could always make a book in iPhoto from Apple, they turn out beautiful

Serif Page Plus is also an option for layout. It is much less expensive. I used it for a local history book that sold 1,000 copies and it had a lot of photos.
I suggest PS or PSE to convert the pdfs to tiff and adjust things like level of black -- some papers won't take pure black.

I have a bunch of PDF files and some photos that I want to combine into 1 'book' that I can print out. any ideas on how to do this? I though I could use word, but it looks like I'd have to upgrade (since insert object does not show as an option on my version of word).

of course I could try just sending everything to my work computer, but I'm trying to avoid that.

any help would be very much appreciated

thanks,

If you have a Mac, use Apple Preview. It's a HUGE gem of a tool that allows you to combine PDFs, edit them, annotate them, and print them to PDF or paper. Adobe Acrobat Professional is an advanced tool that does more of that.

If you have PSE (and I would think PS as well), you can already open pdf files, or save your photos as pdf.
I once did save a document of several pages (very tall and skinny document) as a pdf file from PSE, can't remember the size in mb now, but it was huge.
For simply saving documents, I use a free program "PDF Creator" installed and used like a printer. The same company ( http://www.pdfforge.org/ ) also has a program called PDF Architect. There's a free version, or you can buy versions with more options.
I don't use that one, so can't tell you exactly what it does or doesn't do.

Why don't you just create a Shutterfly account (free) and post them there. It will create a book for you that you can annotate, etc. It's only $19.00, I think. We do this for sports teams all the time...

My idea may take a little longer but may be worth it to you in the end.

Print every thing, including your pdf files on the photo paper you plan to use for your photos. That way all the pages will match. If that's too expensive do the pdf's on plane paper. Just a thought.

Have someone else print it like Blurb.

Almost as cheap as you doing the printing. You download their free software called BookSmart, that is easy to use, put the book together and a week later you have a book.

You could have it printed out for you fairly inexpensively, even with a hard cover, at Costco or several online printing companies and they provide free software for you to place your photos, place your text, etc. Review it, change it around, etc. as much as you want then submit it for printing. No software complexity involved.
