And Raymond Douglas Davies of the Kinks wrote so long ago in Picture Book that you have to hear to really appreciate:

Picture yourself when you're getting old
Sat by the fireside a-pondering all
Picture book, pictures of your mama
Taken by your papa, a long time ago
Picture book of people with each other
To prove they love each other, a long time ago

Na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na
Picture book, picture book

A picture of you in your birthday suit
You sat in the sun on a hot afternoon
Picture book, your mama and your papa
And fat old uncle Charlie out cruising with their friends

Picture book, a holiday in August
Outside a bed and breakfast in sunny Southend
Picture book when you were just a baby
Those days when you were happy, a long time ago

Na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na
Picture book, picture book
Picture book, picture book

Picture book
Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na
A-scooby-dooby-doo

Picture book
Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na
A-scooby-dooby-doo

Picture book, pictures of your mama
Taken by your papa, a long time ago
Long time ago, long time ago
Long time ago
Yeah, yeah, yeah

I agree, but consider this - Since the Iphones make it very easy for the average "I don't want to be bothered with sophisticated camera settings...they are too heavy" person to take photos, is it so bad that more people have become interested in photography as a hobby? ( Discounting the narcissistic selfie stick morons ).

Way back in 2013, a certain Chicago team won a certain award. A few people showed up for the "parade" and a few [most] had their phone ready to catch the team members and "The Cup" as it went by. I have downloaded the original, so feel free to zoom in on the crowd, but, you can see the direction of everyone's arms.
By the way, the same team won again this year, but the route was changed due to road construction.

It was a joke nothing else about the real camera comment.

We have to use a very "wide angle" to understand that mobile smartphones are taking over the social life. Of course it's a wonderful technology we have at our hands to be able to share what we feel , when, how, who, but I believe a majority of those using it, are using it wrong. While people are more and more concerned about mass surveillance, they do willingly expose themselves. Which i believe most people in that crowed were looking for a quick post on Facebook or twiter "Jooohooo , I am here". How about enjoying that moment, let it sink in and appreciate the fact you are there. While the main subject walks by, the fingers are just going like mad to write on the phone. The only memory they have is the snap they took.

Me for one, I'm pretty amazed how people exposed themselves to point where their content is been used, and then we have full front page on the biggest newspaper with the title "My facebook is abused" , "My neighbour had access to my private stash OMG", "This tweet ravishes the internet" " I did not get the job because of my Facebook" . Let's face it, most people have Kardashians syndrome. Our social media makes us blind. We care about the gossip around us, and express our frustration so everybody can see it.

I posted this picture exactly to see what people see in it.

Hi catalint, this is a very telling image. The old lady as the only one truly paying attention to the moment is powerful. I'm in strong agreement with your thoughts re the way folks misuse or mindlessly use social media. Good post, thanks.

And they won again in 2015. Same thing. Impossible to get a photo for the phones, not even focused on a subject, just held in the air to maybe get a lousy picture of something.

Speaking of which...

This old man was equipped with a D4 attached to a 400mm f/2.8 lens on a tripod for the full moon event last Sunday evening. I ended up in a crowd as the moon rose, many with iPhones pointed east.

Several people came over to me and my rig, and asked, "Can I take a look?"

I always said "Sure".

But the one that got me was the young woman who came over, took a look and said, "Wow!". Then she held her iPhone up to the viewfinder eyepiece, and spent several minutes trying to photograph the moon through the viewfinder. The moon, of course, was moving, but fortunately she did not try to adjust the camera to keep it in view. (My response would have been less gracious.)

I don't know if she got the photo on her iPhone or not. At one point she had a pretty good image showing on her phone, but I'm not sure she captured it.

I've seen iPhones used in a lot of different ways, but that was a first.

That might not be such a bad thing. Plus I still have my old film body, so no down time taking photos.
