The smoke has cleared pretty much in Montana. Fires are still burning in some places. You will certainly enjoy all of your stops. Have a great time. I too recommend Moraine Lake. Beautiful photo opportunity there.

Do not underestimate the possibility of encountering a grizzly, even along the roadside. A couple of years ago we stopped at a common photo stop along the Going to the Sun road and just happened to be there after a large group of tourists left. Apparently the bear thought the "coast was clear" and ambled across the road toward the lake for an after-dinner drink. We were right there, nowhere to go, and were very lucky the bear was feeling good and was interested only in getting to the lake. He/she passed within 6 feet of us -- and now I wish I had been clicking the shutter the whole time. Then, that was not uppermost in my mind!

Check out dmeyer's series. For the past couple of weeks she has been posting a number of photos of her trip through that area. She's posted some of the best photographs I've ever seen of the region.

Moraine Lake in Banff is one of the most beautiful spots in the Canadian Rockies. Much more scenic than Lake Louise, although it is also very beautiful. If you go to Lake Louise, take the time and effort to rent a canoe and go out on the lake. You will get a lot of perspectives that you can't get from shore. The tram above the town of Jasper is also worth going on. If it is clear enough you can see Mt Robson 100 miles away.

I have backpacked much of that area. If you are into day hikes, then Iceberg Lake, Ptarmigan Falls, and Ptarmigan tunnel are well worth the hike. You would access the trail heads out of Many Glacier. Bear spray is important.

Flying into Glacier NP and heading north to Alberta for 10 days on Saturday. Any places I should not miss. Have a lot of stops already from reading on UHH. Thanks

Glacier was reportedly closed for the year when the fires struck. Check with NPS for the current up-date. GL

For Banff, Revelstoke, Jasper, Yoho National Parks, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and all things Canadian Rockies, just Google Darwin Wiggett. He's probably the most knowledgeable photographer and writer about the Canadian Rockies. He has several stop-by-stop books of every waterfall and glacier or lake with best seasons and time of day to photograph each one.

Lots of small lakes and waterfalls in the area. Beutiful scenery, and Jasper is still beautiful, was there in June.

We were in Jasper a couple of weeks ago and even though it rained part of the time it was still gorgeous. Took a phtographers tour to Ghost Island in Maligne lake. Even though it was stormy got some great shots. They also provided wine and cheese for the trip back to the lodge. Attached a photo from there

Ditto all of the above. The trip to Jasper is excellent and I agree it is one of the most scenic in NA. While at Lake Louise, be sure to hike to the Japanese Tea House. It is wonderfully set in the mountains and provides a peaceful respite and unexpected photo ops.

I work in Glacier.....the smoke has cleared, and is not a problem any more. The Going to the Sun road was closed for about a day and a half because of snow, but that is also gone. The full road is open now and will be until Oct. 4 when the east side will close to continue construction. The prettiest place in the park is the Many Glacier area on the east side, so don't miss that.

I've also been to Banff, Jasper, Yoho National Parks in Canada.....all beautiful. People love to see Lake Louise, but I think Moraine Lake is much prettier. It's a turn off on the way to Lake Louise. The drive from Banff to Jasper is very nice -- lots to see in the way of Glaciers, water falls, etc.
