Uh...actually it is "Pisgah" Fish Camp. In Pisgah Forest. About 20 minutes from the Asheville Regional Airport, on Hwy 64. ( I live about 7 minutes from it  )
Asheville....fine for architectural, and "freaky" street photography. Downtown Asheville is now considered the Haight-Ashbury of the East....
My advice - as someone that works in and around Asheville? GET OUT of Asheville!!!
Seriously - based on your request for type of shooting. Drive out to Transylvania Co. It is 30-40 minutes from Asheville, and has more waterfalls than any other Co. in the the USA. No kidding. 47% of the land in T Co. is in parks. The Holmes Research Forest, The DuPont State Forest, and Pisgah National Forest. Incredible scenery, waterfalls, rivers, wildlife...and - you can access the BLR ( Blue Ridge Parkway ) and see Cold Mountain - then drive north about 15 minutes - and have local trout at the Pisgah Inn. Incredible views at approx 5000 ft. elevation. And - you can drive over to Cataloochee - and see the Elk that have been re-introduced here. They come down tot a field by the road in the evening to graze. Some incredible photo ops.
Wish I was available to point out some great places first hand - but I will be in Tuscany for a couple of weeks.
Best!

I think you still spelled it wrong. It P-I-S-G-A-H.

http://www.northcarolinahistory.orgThe Reverend James Hall is attributed as the first person to call the region Pisgah. During General Griffith Rutherfords march to eradicate the Cherokee in 1776, Reverend Hall remarked about the mountains of Buncombe County. In reference to the Biblical peak where Moses viewed the promised land, Hall called the place Mount Pisgah, and the area retained the name ever since.
Hmm, always wondered where the name came from :). I read the reviews for the restaurant. If you go there andrea, order extra hushpuppies for me :)

Saw that when I did a google search. The place I visited was no more than 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from the airport. I was aircrew with a 90 min. turn-around. Since we were on foot there was no way we would travel any distance at all. Possibly the place we found was the original, sort of the "anchor" of the chain. This discussion just made me pour some maple syrup on my ice cream.

You have my attention when you say waterfalls. They are one of my favorite things to photograph. This is the information I really need and I will look up Transylvania County in advance of going out. I have a brand new Canon 6D that I want to get out in the field and really put through its paces so and this will be ideal. Thank you for stopping by to help me out.
Just walk on the golf course downtown has many pops

Sorry - there is no golf course downtown...THe closest is the Grove Park golf course. It not only private for guests and paying folks... It is one of those places that you might have a hard time getting out of there with your gear intact if you are caught not he course un-autorized.
The Grove Park always has some Hollywierders, or Diplomats or other Political pukes - so they have pretty good security

I am going to be going to Asheville, NC next Sunday September 13 and I need to get some ideas of places to go that I can reach fairly easily for good photographic opportunities. I am not looking to go to the Biltmore but would rather get nature and landscape suggestions. I intend to leave early enough to get there before noon and I will be staying at the Grove Park Inn until Wednesday. I will be busy during the daytime but will have Monday and Tuesday evenings open for additional photography opportunities. I would love to hear from anyone who can help me out with ideas.

Take a walking tour of "The Cove," which is the Billy Graham Christian retreat center.

My pleasure! Look at the websites for the places I mentioned to get more info - or PM me up until Thursday. After that I will be roaming Tuscany.

Surprised no one mentioned Great Smoky National Park. If you are looking for landscape and nature, that would be hard to beat.
45 minute (or so) drive. If you go, sunrise on Clingman's dome is a must

That may be for 3 reasons:
1.Because it is incredibly crowded until the leaves fall of the trees. Used to be, there were the summer tourists, then the leaf peppers. @ relatively short periods, then the park would " get a rest ". Not anymore. It has become like a zoo, where one can go - to see humans - many acting like animals - in what would be their "native habitat" - if they had not lived in cities for thousands of years and forgotten the value of NOT ruining the land with trash, carving initials in trees, and creating havoc as a pastime
2. I don't think the OP expressed a desire to defend her equipment for breakage due to the above mentioned throngs of hellions, and situationally unaware folks that crowd the park - i.e. "gee- I am so sorry about your camera going off the overlook....I didn't see you standing there with that big tripod.."
3. It is in reality more like 1-12/2 hour to great shooting in the GSNP from Asheville. Yes, the parks eastern most boundaries may be only 45 minutes away - but that as they say...is "marketing spin"
In Transylvania Co - I live less than 10 minutes from 2 parks. They are not as "human polluted" as the Great Smokies...yet...and all less than 40 minutes from the heart of Asheville.
It's been mentioned only once but Dupont State Forest outside Hendersonville is a great natural setting and all the more enjoyable once you learn the history of the park. Great waterfalls and covered bridges.

If you find time, go on the Blue Ridge Parkway, either direction for some great scenery pics. In the late afternoon or evening, go downtown to Pack Square (not far from Grove Park). And just take pics around The Grove Park for some good landscape and architectural pics.
