I am going to be going to Asheville, NC next Sunday September 13 and I need to get some ideas of places to go that I can reach fairly easily for good photographic opportunities. I am not looking to go to the Biltmore but would rather get nature and landscape suggestions. I intend to leave early enough to get there before noon and I will be staying at the Grove Park Inn until Wednesday. I will be busy during the daytime but will have Monday and Tuesday evenings open for additional photography opportunities. I would love to hear from anyone who can help me out with ideas.

Just walk outside the Grovepark Inn. Even from the balcony bar at sunset is truly beautiful! Also the Blueridge Parkway is no more than ten minutes away. All you gotta do is drive up Macon Rd. The road the GPI is on, for ten minutes.

Around the corner, is Beaverdam Lake. There is a nature sanctuary there. Turtles can be shot(with a camera of course) The water is clear enough to see the fish swimming for morsels thrown in by kids.

I can go on and on. If you are interested in Street Photog, OMG! Downtown AVL is the place to go!

Andrea- so many opportunities . Start with the old part of GPI. Look for views of Asheville and environs from Town Mt. Rd.
downtown has much in Architecture and street life. you will also be near a BRPkwy entrance.
So much depends on your interest ,time, and equipment.

If you're staying at the Grove Park Inn opportunities abound. Chefneil has sent you in the right direction. Just make certain you keep your batteries charged and your camera handy and there's no way you won't have opportunities galore. Have a good time and a safe journey. I'll be watching for your return photos!! :)

Thank you Chefneil for your very specific directions. This is exactly the sort of information I was looking for. I will have most of the day on Sunday to get away from Asheville a bit but need to know exactly where I am headed so I don't waste my available time. I will likely do some street photography in the evenings. I will check out your blog to see what you have posted.

Thank you Nick for your reply. I do know that the parkway is close to where I will be and want to get there. I go to Mabry Mill often and photograph it. I am looking for new places to shoot.

Thank you hcmcdole for your suggestions. I am not planning on visiting the Biltmore this time around but Lake Lure and Chimney Rock are good ideas.

Thank you Swan for your kind reply. I agree that Chefneil has given me the best specific recommendations. I will follow his advice and go up the road from the Grove Park. I have photographed a lot of the area around the Grove Park on a previous visit but may try to get some better images this time since I have better equipment and more experience. I will definitely be posting some of what I see there.

If you want, we can get together for a cup and talk through some other ideas. Also, the NC Arboretum has a well respected Bonsia collection as well as various exhibits and walking trails.

Pisach Fish Farm. Used to be about 1/2 mile "up the road" from thew airport. You can order whatever you want from the menu, it'll be deeeeeep-fried just to clog your arteries. Very cheerful staff, hush puppies to die for. Clean grease daily. Gud Fud.

I would like to meet for a cup of something (I don't drink coffee) and talk about possibilities. I can PM you with the specifics of when I will get up there to Asheville. I am driving up on Sunday morning from the Mount Airy area.

I just realized the misspelling of Piscah. It's actually the Piscah Fish Camp. Still in operation according to a google search. Have fun, it's a good ol' folks place.
