Myself, I prefer the two separate rings. Personal preference, I suppose. But, do any of you miss not having that extra 10mm that the larger, heavier and more expensive 70-200 has? I would think not. Both are 2.8 which, to me, would be the more important factor.

I’d love to have one.

I think that's a comfort thing! If I'm at the edge of what one of these can do, I can usually do just a bit wider or a bit closer with my feet!

Finally, I got myself an used Nikkor 80 - 200 ED 2.8 in perfect condition.
Now I have two lenses only, a 50 mm 1.8 and 80 - 200.

Life is beautiful!

Good lens. I have one that is at least 20 years old, it still takes great pictures on my D610. I finally retired it (still have it as backup) for the Nikon 70-200 because I wanted the VR

That would be true. A much cheaper way of getting that extra "10mm"!

I have used this lens for many, many years. Probably the best one I have. Enjoy!

I have the AF-D version of this lens which I got by trading a 28-300 AF-S. It is a great lens and I use it often. Maybe some day I will replace it with a 70-200 VR, but it is performing really well. For 300mm I bought a 30 year old F/4.5 AI-s which is just phenomenal and $200 or less.

I had that 300mm f4.5 AI-S. Loved it. Didn’t use it much but when the situation called for it, it was the only lens that would do the job.

I hate it that some of these zoom lenses expand as they do. Makes them look cheap and “amateurish”. To me, anyway.

Yes, I agree. But, to have a lens that does NOT do that, as this one doesn’t, costs a whole lot more than most of us can handle.

Rather than start a new topic, I thought I could ask my question here.

I just bought this lens (the same push-pull type) from a seller on Amazon. I paid $595 for it, listed in “Used — Like New” condition. Wondering if I got a good deal or not. Per Amazon’s policy, I have 30 days to return it if I want to, for any reason.

I didn’t WANT the push-pull, I wanted the two-ring, and the photo that was posted on the Amazon ad showed the two-ring version. However, the individual seller’s listing, in the “Used and like new from…” section did not include a photo of the actual lens. I was surprised when I opened the box it came in to find that it was the older version.

It was listed as “Like New” and it really does look that way. However, I’m concerned about a couple of things. IS the two-ring version actually better and, if so, in what way? Is the AF any faster or more accurate? Is the lack of a tripod collar on the lens a problem for anyone? My old 300mm f4.5 had such a collar, and the two-ring version of this lens has it. I would be concerned about such a heavy lens possibly damaging the mount on the camera. Or is that really not a problem?

Last question, the aperture indicator in the camera’s (D7100) display reads only “6.3”, and when I rotate the aperture ring, it beeps and flashes an error indicator. What am I doing wrong or what am I missing? Do I need to change a setting? I have to “Non-CPU” settings in the camera. One for my 50mm f1.4 and the other for the 105mm f2.5, both older AI-S manual focus lenses.

If you are not satisfied with your new purchase, send it back while you can. First of all, you spent too much on a push pull 80-200 2.8. I have one that has a slight dent on the filter ring, and light wear, but works well, I'll sell for $200. For what you paid, you should be close to the price of a twist focus 80-200 2.8 D model.

I agree that you were taken on this deal! I'd send it back as well. Best of luck.

Thank you both. I suspected as much. I just received it two days ago. I'll pack it back up and ship it back.

As I said in my opening comment, I thought that the two-ring Verizon was what I was getting. It was a photo of that version that was attached to the Amazon ad.

EDIT: I was unable to edit my previous comment. Obviously, I meant “version”, not “Verizon”! :)

You payed too much, $300 tops for the older version. Also I have purchased lens from Japan because I wanted made in Japan lens only.

If you read the earlier comments, I DID send it back, about a week after I received it. Got a full refund within a few days.

I have since bought the Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G, which I LOVE. The AF is very fast and I can’t complain one bit about the sharpness. It’s a great lens.
