I have both of the setups you mentioned. I found that the tc14 provided little advantage, if any for capturing wildlife. You do have an extra stop, but the 80-400 is a very capable lens on its own. If you really needed the light, you might as well use the 70-200 on one body, and the 80-400 on the other, if you have two bodies to use. That is what I do.

The 70-200 is a fantastic lens though...

Yes on the two bodies. Will decide if, when and where to use the tc. I will be roughly in the same area for about 12 days and have a chance to experiment and weigh times and possibilities. Wish I could shoot more before my trip with two new lenses! Thank you for your reply! Dave.

Five minutes ago I ordered the 70-200 2.8, Brown truck Tuesday.

Many thanks to all for their thoughts. Too much good information! Dave.

You will be pleased with this lens and it will get a lot of use I'm sure. I have grandkids ages 11, 9, 5 and 2. The 70-200 gets used a lot for their indoor and night sports and for portraits of all the extended family members and friends.
I have the new Nikon 24-70 on order and expect it will get a lot of use for indoor and low-light family, school and other events.
Good glass lasts a long time.

have a 70-200L 2.8 Canon, it shudda come with wheels. Prefer the 20-70, much smaller and one can always crop later... But if you have an itch, well......

Thank you for the encouragement! I'm going to wait until March for the 24-70.  The grandkids are also a consideration for me! (4,6,7,10,11,11,14,19). :-)

I understand the itch part, but it often supersedes the common sense part, so last year I bought a nice mono to go when I don't bring the tripod. It attaches nicely to my backpack.

Congrats on all the grandkids, Dave. You may need to get a fish eye lens for family reunion group shots!
