I have a Nikon 80-400vr with a 1.4 TC, but I've always had the hots for the 70-200 2.8.

For walk around, lower light wildlife, would the 70-200's extra stop be worth it? Closer shots, not across a field. Walking in the woods, Limited birding.

I am aware of losing a stop with the 1.4.

Many of us always knew you couldn't make a decision for yourself. ;)

I am a proponent of overlap, but not as much as you propose.
Buy, try, sell if you don't like.
Pretty simple.

Getting worse!

Common sense says it's dumb, but I guess the only way is to try it. I'm not to keen on buy and try, so a rental would make sense. I was hoping someone already played the game.

To each their own. You describe two different uses. That alone may justify your choice of two lenses.

When I get that itch I always end up scratching it. Hope you have more sense than me, I would have already ordered it! Just don't let me spend your money. I am weak when it comes to heavy, fast lenses... ;)
