While practicing with my macro lens and side mounted flash, I caught this bumble bee in a pretty good pose on an interesting flower. Location was Boundary Creek Park in Moorestown, NJ. Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon 100mm F2.8 macro lens, Manual exposure, Shutter Speed: 1/1250 sec, F11 for increased depth of field, ISO: 200, spot metering, side mounted flash, flash at -2 (1/4 brightness)

Distance was 1.5-2 feet.

I was experimenting with settings and this worked pretty well.

I'd say the download is worth it for the extra detail!

The more I see of this the more I am tugged in the direction of a good macro lens. Good work.

Thanks, Greg! With some effort, the macro lens can produce the detail, that's for sure. :)

WOW, excellent shot Den.

Thanks, Earnest. It was the result of some reading and a lot of trial and error!

Stunning shot! I just went out and shot close up but I can't get a faster shutter speed than 1/200 with my flash on, you got 1/1250 that's amazing and your shot is too. Great Job!

Trig, a built in flash is typically limited to 1/250th of a second. If you buy a flash unit that attaches to the camera, it might have the capability to support a faster shutter speed. That feature is call high-speed sync.

One more thing- my side-mounted flash unit was angled toward the subject at a 45 degree angle.

Thanks for the info, I liked how yours turned out, I have a speed light 700 that I attach but I've always used rear sync and now I'm going to try some thing new next time out. Thanks Den.

By the way, I enjoyed you signature line, especially "gather ye pixels while ye may." Good stuff! (I gather a lot of pixels!) Den

Thank you Den.... here is the whole poem I wrote in 2014
AN ODE TO THE PHOTOGRAPHERS OF THE WORLD
By Donald Pullum, Photographer, Environmental Scientist -- July 9, 2014

Gather Ye Pixels while ye may
Be it by flash or the bright of day.

Be it near or far, fly’s eye or crater of moon
A lens to fit the need, made of sand from a dune

Photons wander thru space
They, as light, set the pace

Free to wander free to roam
Captured by a sensor they have a home

Put on displayed for all to see often fixed with ink
Image projected, HDTV, or sent by net link

Admired, never will their life be dull
Better with an edit and not as a cull

From Kodak early to now ubiquitous i-Phone
Our brain’s desire is image prone

Photographers young or old live far and wide
Strive perfection and take defects in their stride

Our shots from have changed the world perils
From weekly News Path’e, now real time life unfurls

Photographers worldwide stand proud and tall
We an image sharing family support one and all

So photographers gather ye pixels while ye may
They or you may not be there another day

Wonderful, DP! I enjoyed your poem enthusiastically!

The four lines I quoted had a special meaning for me. For some years I had been an amateur astronomer sharing views through my telescopes with folks who visited astronomy club outings.

Whenever we looked at the Andromeda galaxy, I always told the viewer that the image they were seeing was possible because many light photons traveled through space for over 2 millions years and the first thing the photons touched was their eye.

Further, the energy of those photons touching their eye causes their brain to create proteins in their brain that become a memory.

So those photons came all this long distance over all these years to become a memory in their mind.

Some seemed to appreciate that. I know you would!

Den, I was asked last night while chatting, "Don't you believe in God?!!?"
I replied...discussions of God are well beyond any preacher... God is the realm of the people in Theoretical Physic, Astrophysicists, and Astronomers. aaa and the mathematician...

You, Den, made it so wonderfully personal when you said, "<those> many light photons traveled through space for over 2 millions years and the first thing the photons touched was their eye."

Those photos are unique to the individual, and not same ones that the person next to them senses... just meant for you a gift from a star.

Beyond comprehension. In photography we must ask not how many angles fit on the head of a pin, rather how many photos.

Thanks, Den.

I didn't cover the flash with its built in diffuser. Is that recommended for a macro shot?

If so, I want to keep that in mind for the next time.
