While practicing with my macro lens and side mounted flash, I caught this bumble bee in a pretty good pose on an interesting flower. Location was Boundary Creek Park in Moorestown, NJ. Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon 100mm F2.8 macro lens, Manual exposure, Shutter Speed: 1/1250 sec, F11 for increased depth of field, ISO: 200, spot metering, side mounted flash, flash at -2 (1/4 brightness)
Distance was 1.5-2 feet.
I was experimenting with settings and this worked pretty well.
I'd say the download is worth it for the extra detail!

Excellent!
Thanks, HD! My experimenting paid off. Of course there were lots of shots that I deleted (as is normal)!
You were an obvious success. Congratulations!

Good shot
From the title I thought you either had a very big bee or a very tiny camera, lens and flash rig.

Thanks, Robert!
I'll have to do a better job on my titles! :P
I looked up images of coneflowers and that's exactly what it was. Thanks, LoneRangeFinder! (nice name!)
I was hoping to get some decent butterfly photos there, but none of my butterfly shots were worth keeping.
I'l check out your link.

I'd have to give you 4.5 stars on that one! You nailed it as well! Like the side light, and the setting worked well. Your right...the download really shows it off. Nice shot indeed.
Thanks, Boone.    -

Boone, thanks for your kind words! I had read about the side mounted flash in a photography article on macros and decided to try it out. I do like the effect!

DenDiMarco yes good photo, but more beautiful was the attention to providing details to fellow UHH people. One might know looking at your profile, Chemistry, Math, Tech Management. Thank you, your description and attention to detail is a model for others to follow.
I am often irate and driven to rant by the sloppy UHH people who ask vague questions with no details... what? they think digital photography is not technical. Film photography was filled with details long before 0&1s were common. Setting up SOPs for flowers, insects, etc. is the mechanics of photography; once that is done the good results from Art/Creativity follows.
Thank you DenDiMarco
That is a marvelous photo. Thanks for sharing that. I agree that the composition is wonderful in this shot. The more I see of this the more I am tugged in the direction of a good macro lens. Good work.

Thanks for the perspective, DPullum. I wasn't sure if I should provide the details, but now I'll be sure to continue doing so!
By the way, I enjoyed you signature line, especially "gather ye pixels while ye may."
Good stuff! (I gather a lot of pixels!)
