I think you are more likely to see the Barred Owls in the daytime than most others. The ones around here are more likely to hide in trees providing fairly dense cover and I listen for the songbirds making that scolding sound when they spot one. Of course it's even more obvious when the crows spot them!

While dining in our sunroom we happen to see a very large bird sail low across and found it setting in a Beach tree not far away. Grabbed the camera, attached the 150-600 lens and very slowly started to crank open the casement window just wide enough to fit the lens through, thinking that it may fly any minute. Took a few quick shots while siting/laying on the floor in a extremely cramped position! Couldn't take that anymore so grabbed the tripod and opened it in the lowest position possible. After all this caution, it really didn't seem to mind and stayed around for quite some time!

If you have more opportunities to photograph the owls, it would be great to see catch light in their eyes, achieved by focusing on the eyes.

Yes, sometimes it just seems to happen that way, Marilyng. Most of the time the bird flies before you are ready for the shot, or is hidden by foliage, etc. One thing that helps is that the Barred owls seem to prefer living around the swamps and even feeding on small fish, along with their more normal diet of small birds, animals, frogs lizards, snakes and probably even large insets. Here's hoping your special experience comes your way very soon, and thanks for your kind words and for viewing. PS I noticed that you are from Ohio and I subscribe to a great little family owned birding magazine, Bird Watcher's Digest, that is published in Marietta, Ohio that I enjoy reading very much. Take care!

Thanks for the suggestion clgonzo, but I have about fifty pictures of the owl, in which I was trying to do just that but it did not cooperate so very well. Some of the ones that I downloaded came about as close as any to achieving that, but also wish they could have been better. Oh well, maybe next time. Thanks for commenting and looking. Take care!
