You don't need a discussion. In this case, a simple answer to the first question would have been enough.

The image was posted asking for opinions. The opinions went beyond the simple aesthetics. Did that make them off limits? Invalid?

OK, thanks. No problem, I thought the OP was being unfairly criticized for not having a back story.

My fault. I did not clearly state the purpose of my posting. I have been used to Critique where aesthetics is taken for granted in any "What do you think?" query. I will not make that error again. My posts in any picture section is always about the aesthetics. Never about politics or other foolishness of man's interaction with man on a non aesthetic basis. There are other sections in this forum for that kind of stuff. There are plenty of folks much more qualified than I to argue in those sections. Let them solve the worlds problems. Let me make the pictures I want to make without having to worry about setting up a back story.

If you have something to offer aesthetically, I will take heed. If not, please do not respond to my posts. I couldn't care less how you feel about titles - regardless of the subject. If I want to title something "Donkey Mating With Light Pole" that is my privilege. No back story needed. I think this is a simple enough request. In the future I will not respond to such replies.

I like them both rather equally, Jim. They are interesting details from typical urban decay.

I don't need to know the story behind the bullet holes, any more than I need to know how the subject of a street portrait became a street busker, or worse, became homeless.

The proliferation of bullet holes through our urban landscape speaks for itself. There are countless tragedies, and their victims are often nameless and faceless. In my city (one of the top 10 most dangerous in the US), bullet holes and gang graffiti are everywhere, and no one knows their provenance. I never knew where the bullet holes in my own car came from, while it was parked in a public school lot. We never knew the why's and wherefores of fresh bullet holes that riddled some of our schools and were discovered usually on Monday mornings. I have worked with so many troubled children over the years who were caught in this culture of poverty and violence, that I know almost every young man featured on the local news as either the shooter or the victim, and probably would know others if more than a small percentage of the crimes were ever solved.

In one sense, the lack of information IS the story as I understand it.

That's really scary. So far we have been lucky. Nothing close to us has ever been that bad. Times, though, are a changing and unless we do something dramatic society as we know it will no longer exist. But investing in solutions is not favored by many politicians who are afraid of their constituent base. How do we point such people? I have no idea. I'm just a lowly photographer with little influence on the affairs of life in America - land of the free - for some.

You have said what I wanted to say. My intent was only to join others in engaging the imagination. Everyone's story becomes my story. To tell my own story would be to direct the imagination of others. I have been principled to this attitude of non-interference since I first began making photographs in the early 70's.

The photograph that moved me to this was titled, "Navigation Without Numbers" by Wynn Bullock. I later had the opportunity to print that wonderful 8x10 negative for him in his darkroom. The title came from the label on a box sitting in the window above the black sheeted bed on which a nude baby boy lay with his nude mother along side of him. If you have not seen this particular photograph it may be viewed here:

And yes, this is one of my prints. This is a horrible reproduction but I know by a certain treatment which only I am aware of. Wynn never spotted it.

There is a back story and it's really quite sad. But you will never hear that story from me. It might influence others to consider this photograph in an ending way. Not what Wynn wanted. He wanted the mystery to present itself. Even the title was a mystery. Why title something as beautiful as this photograph with a label on a box which is almost out of vision on the far right side of the photograph?

Thanks for your excellent contribution to this discussion. I had not intended that it be about titles - but about the shortcomings of my photograph.

But when someone else tries to bend the world to only his way that's not going to fly with me. I think you are of the same opinion.

Thanks 050,

I am sure there are a quite a few who have had the same experience. To bad I didn't get into photography until nearly 20 years following Korea. Seoul was an especially real mess.
