I stopped using RAW over a year ago now. The main reason being that the file sizes are too large (15mb) and take much longer to process.
The Jpegs produce very high quality images and are quicker to process if required.
I give my photos two tests:
1:Zoom into full screen (Equates to A2 paper size)
2:100% crop.
These check for sharpness and colour etc.
If test no 1 is satisfactory I would almost certainly keep it.
The second test is more critical but if I am happy with the image quality it will confirm my first choice

Post something and let's have a go at it. You be the judge. :)

Also, if I did not want to edit the RAW, I could.......just go into PS, click the Image Processor button, and boom, I have JPGS.[quote]

But the JPG this produces is not the same (or as good) as a JPG the camera produces with custom settings. BOOM.

I won't post anything for anyone else to play with, because any shots I keep (more than 80% of my shots) are the way I want them, sometimes with a LITTLE pp but usually with very little or NONE!! I know how to properly expose my shots for the effects I want.

With todays cameras, from P&S to Bridge to DSLR and everything along the way, anyone that can pay attention to what they are doing can take very good photos in JPG, and any adjustments necessary can easily be done to the JPG files.

However, those who do NOT understand how to properly set their cameras will need to shoot RAW so they can make up for their lack of understanding of the BASICS OF EXPOSURE. Those are the people that probably can't make sense out of Bryan Peterson's books!!

Best quote I ever read on this forum, thanks.

When shooting JPG the photogs can make all the decisions. When shooting RAW they can't - they have to wait to see what they got. The RAW will usually be flat and nasty before PP, but with skill a sow's ear can be turned into a silk purse. JPGs can also be PPd (all facets of). For several months I have been shooting and PPing both JPG and RAW. With most of my pics the differences are a close run thing. RAW wins when I blow the highlights (not often). So if you are in the habit of blowing highlights - shoot RAW.

"The RAW will usually be flat and nasty before PP" Maybe that depends on the camera and software. I use an old Canon 50D and I shoot RAW and JPG and I have the resolution on the camera maxed out. I use Paint Shop Pro X7 on 64 bit Windows 7. My RAW files are sharper and the color is truer. The JPGs are really good but when I compare them side by side the edges on things like painted lines on a curve are sharper in the RAW file and colors are noticeably better when compared side by side. Maybe it's just because of the camera but maybe something worth noting when trying to decide.

I have been shooting raw with ff cameras for years and was considering a newer crop dslr. How good are theses camera using jpeg, since raw is time consuming. What kind of results are you getting?
Also would be interesting knowing if anyone that once used raw is no using only jpeg?
thanks for your reply!

Oh no. Not again.

I use a Canon 50D crop sensor and I shoot RAW and JPG at the same time. The JPGs are really good but when compared to the RAW at the same time before any PP in Paintshop Pro X7 the RAW is noticeably sharper and truer colors.

I use a DX (D7100 and an older D70s constantly and never shoot jpg..I do all of my RAW (NEF) to jpg conversios AFTER I have everything adjusted in Lightroom. Don't Compromise your images. Shoot in RAW then convert. Remember that anything you shoot in jpg will always be jpg and you can never go back. Anything that you shoot in RAW (NEF) can be converted to jpg, tiff or what ever at anytime and you still have your original RAW and it's container or side car with adjustments. Plus you can always make RAW Duplicates in Lightroom and adjust, crop or whatever each seperately. While LR does allow for some lattitude in JPG, it is nowhere near what you have in RAW.

You surprise me - usually all digipics need some sharpening. BUT RAWS are not sharpened "in camera", however JPGs ARE sharpened "in camera" even if left to mfgs default settings.
Usually colors in RAWs are not so good before PP - they are, after all, raw pics designed for developing and improving out of camera. :-)

Yes - but LR and PS are not the only professional editors on the globe!

Ah, here we go again. Same rank amateurs talking about how they know how to shoot better than all the pros.
