I use an iPad and haven't had any problems. My wife often brings her MacBook Air and I usually load at least some of my pictures on that as well.

We went to Germany and Austria four years ago. Took over 2,000 photos and downloaded them to an iPad with 32 gigs. Light weight and no storage problem, Used email to send some picture back to family, also face time with kids and grandkids. Transferred pix to Mac when we got home. iPad much light than MacBook.

How did you download your photos from camera to the iPad? I have a Nikon that has a wireless adapter, but it's a bit slow and the files are converted to JPG for the transfer. I'd like to move photos/backup to iPad. How do you do that?

Is there a Jackson Hole and Yellowstone in Europe?
Just kidding, Jerry! Couldn't help it!

I use a Vosonic Media Device - 8860P - no longer available. It has a 500 GB hard drive - CF & SDHC ports to receive and automatically upload an entire card's worth of images. It is compact and light. Also a viewer and mp3 player. Combining that with an iphone, ipad or tablet provides everything I need for trips.

B & H carries a variety of portable storage devices. Here is the link:

Have a great trip,

If you r traveling then backup should go online and either rablet or laptop should do it

Why could u not store pics on samsung? There is nothing intrinsically stopping that

There is an accessory for the iPad that you insert your memory card into and then plug it into the iPad. I use this almost daily. Couldn't be any simpler than this.

Yes, I have that too and I find it works well. However, on a long trip, I may take 3 or 4 thousand images with my 7D MII or 5D MIII. iPads do not have sufficient storage for that amount of data. My media device works very well.

Good luck with your choice.

Suggest investing in more memory cards and leave the computer work after returning from your trip. Enjoy your vacation.

As far as I know, the connection for an iPad will only receive sdhc cards, not compact flash.

If your iPad has sufficient storage it will work fine for your sdhc cards. Might be an easy solution for you. It does not work for me because my iPad is 64 GB and I shoot with both sdhc & cf cards.

Sure it can. I have had two Samsung tablets and they store photos just fine on the SD card. That said, the space is limited.

Acer makes a great small, fast laptop that weighs less that three pounds and has a 256gb SSD and an SDcard reader. That's what I took to Europe in May.

Three years ago when I was looking for a new laptop, I wanted light and at least 256gb SSD. I looked at all the major brands: HP, Toshiba, Samsung, Dell, etc. but they were all offering only 128gb or they were heavy or . . . I was skeptical of Acer which was a second tier maker, but this thing has been beautiful. It is solid and reliable. Not the cheapest (Lots cheaper than the Mac toy computers, of course) but not outrageous either.

The new version has updates like USB 3.0 etc.

I was in that position two years ago for a trip to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. I got a little netbook, Asus, I think. It has USB ports and a decent-sized hard drive, but it was small, light, and cheap. I also brought a small external hard drive. When I got home, I had hundreds of pictures in three places: SD cards, a hard drive, and a computer.

Asus is another good brand. Not as popular as it should be, but good quality. When I used to be in the computer biz, we liked to build desktops with ASUS motherboards and video cards because they were better built. I had an ASUS laptop a few years ago and it was so good, my grandson "stole" it to take to college.

No problems storing photos at all. . . .

The biggest problem may be finding a computer to act as "middle-man."

. . .
EDIT: Right now I am trying out a small Notebook (ASUS 12" ) with Win8 for "everything": e-mail, photo storage, Solitaire, etc. It has USB ports, an SD-card port, a keyboard, and I can use a mouse with it. Want to know all the ins and outs before going on holidays and using it "for real".
While I realize that there are different models of... (show quote)

Don't need to use a computer. Get a cheap plugin card reader to go into the samsung's usb port (Same place you charge it.) The Samsung Tab's file manager will let you move the files to wherever you want. Though I do prefer a small laptop like the ASUS or an ACER. Like MorningStar, I vastly prefer the mouse to the built in track pads.

No joy! "Same place you charge it" is a proprietary connection. Looks the same as for example the one on an iPod, but they're not interchangeable.
The other end of the cable is a "regular" USB connector, but the tablet does not have a port for that.
My card-reader (yes, cheap one, $9.95) has a mini-USB port for the cable, and the other end of the cable is a "regular" USB connection.
I may just end up leaving the tablet at home, and using the ASUS laptop for some programs and storage, and also take an external hard drive to make sure I've got enough storage for holiday- and grandkids photos.
