Someone who's paying a attention would instantly know the camera is a crop-sensored Canon:

The "18" of the 18-270 tells me it's for a crop sensor.
The "L" of the 24-70L tells me it's Canon.

(But it is always a good idea to tell us at the outset.)

Some of us - who actually pay attention - like not to assume, and to be nice to the folks posting their questions too!
Additionally - some of us are not "Canonites"...so we do not keep up their nomenclature.

Generally, I agree with "give me more information" but, in this case, I have to disagree.

Granted, he doesn't know me so he doesn't know my photographic preferences but, I simply asked for a general opinion on what would be a good landscape lens.

What difference does it make what brand of tripod I use? One can't simply say, "Well, my preference is... xyz but, you need a sturdy tripod in order to use it"?

I guess I didn't like the way he came across with his questioning. Felt like I was sitting in a small room with nothing but a table, two chairs, a mirror and a hot spot light beating down on me.

I didn't ask brand, I asked model.
Hang on while I shift the light.

Virtually everyday we get people ask this question.

From my point of view, none of the questions you asked were/are crucial to a simple response so, I go back to my previous response to you... if you can't see your way to a simple response, just scroll past the question.

FWIW - I do believe that the intent Lighthouse has is honorable, in that he was attempting to assist you with the best possible answers. Sometimes we need to know more than "bare minimum" in order to feel comfortable in giving a response. Why?

Because there is always a present ( if not pervasive....) attitude held by more than a few folks here that simply enjoy being able to talk down to you, or anyone else.

So - if you don't cover ALL of the bases, variables and potentials - SOMEONE *IS* going to find fault with your statement, recommendations, etc.

It is truly a shame that we cannot simply ask questions and provide input/answers for one another - without having to first strategize our statements, questions - or even suggestions - KNOWING we will have to defend them against persons that seem only content in feeling superior - by stepping on others - beyond information correction - but truly in attempt to make others look bad. Childish - isn't it? And - it speaks volumes of personal insecurity....

Well, people come to places like this and ask questions because they don't have all the answers. Unfortunately, this will ALWAYS give someone like lighthouse a reason to be a real "Richard" - if you know what I mean.

I'm sure he and some others enjoy competing to be crowned King "Richard-head".

Maybe I missed the template on this forum that explains how to ask questions and what information to provide when asking that question. If so, maybe someone could point me in that direction.

I use a Sigma 17-50mm on my Nikon D7000 and am pleased with it. However, I will also tell you that I am a novice photographer.

No... you keep on asking questions in any way you like.

And PLEASE do not be put off by folk who aren't as accommodating or friendly as they should be.....

.....Just ignore those who are deliberately condescending and mean.

Any ideas on the best type of lens to use for landscape photography?

I have an 18-270 zoom and just rented a 24-70L IS II but feel that one is way too expensive for my needs.

Not sure I would be better off with a zoom or fixed length.

You are correct. There are three people that are always making snide, rude, and dumba$$ comments. They never really attempt to help anyone. These three must live miserable lives. One in particular must think his retorts are hilarious. I believe that the combined IQ's of these dimwits could be rolled with a pair of dice. The three I am talking about have not posted to Boos question. Have a wonderful weekend.

I use the Tokina 11 to 16 f 2.8 on my 60d. I have been using this lens for about 4 years now and love it. I have shot many landscapes and do a lot of waterfalls with a variable neutral density filter and the combination is great. I hope this helps.

I am a Sony shooter, but strongly believe in getting the best lenses I can afford, and have had lots of fun trying lenses I buy used on eBay and selling them a few months later usually for what I paid for them, or perhaps a bit less. Cheaper than renting and you can keep them as long as you like, perhaps forever! Be careful and buy from sellers offering a return policy of some sort! You can get problems. But having said that, I would go for the Canon lenses!

I utilize everything from a wide-angle to the 70-200 for landscapes depends on what perspective I want
