Good response,,, some people here can get a little anal at times.
I've got a Sigma 17 - 70 wide angle zoom along with a Cannon 70 - 300,,, those seem to cover most situations from flowers to wildlife for me. But then again I guess I'm not technical enough.

I don't know about "not technical enough" Horn; seems
like a sensible pair of lenses to me.

Generally, I agree with "give me more information" but, in this case, I have to disagree.

Granted, he doesn't know me so he doesn't know my photographic preferences but, I simply asked for a general opinion on what would be a good landscape lens.

What difference does it make what brand of tripod I use? One can't simply say, "Well, my preference is... xyz but, you need a sturdy tripod in order to use it"?

I guess I didn't like the way he came across with his questioning. Felt like I was sitting in a small room with nothing but a table, two chairs, a mirror and a hot spot light beating down on me.

You are exactly right, Lighthouse shouldn't have wasted 30 seconds of his life that he can never get back.

It is unfortunate that you ask a very basic question, to which only you should know the answer to. Answering his questions would get you a much better answer instead of what someone else uses. You could have just called the nearest camera store or any pro in your town.

I thought that lighthouse was putting a lot of effort into getting the entire situation understood so he could make an optimum suggestion for the overall situation. All his questions would affect the recommendation.

Any ideas on the best type of lens to use for landscape photography?

I have an 18-270 zoom and just rented a 24-70L IS II but feel that one is way too expensive for my needs.

Not sure I would be better off with a zoom or fixed length.

Canon EF 24-105mm f?4.0 IS USM Excellent all-around lens. Built very well, med. range in weight, excellent glass, available in refurb for $799.00. This lens can fill most wide shots fairly well while serving a wide range of focal lengths. Must be good or they would have built a newer version.

For landscape shoots use the largest lens you can afford even look on the used market for a good wide lens. 14mm-18mm is a good place to start. f2.8 is usually a good combo also. Remember you can crop a large shot if you need to, but it does not work the other way around. Bottom line save up for a good crisp 2.8 wide lens and get a good tripod. Good Luck !
