I have worked in engineering for years and I can tell everyone that the government could require the auto industry to install a chip in the steering wheel of any vehicle, that when someone tried to use their phone close to the wheel it would not work.
The only way anyone could use their device would be to pull off the road and shut off their vehicle. If indeed they were in an emergency situation they could hand the phone to a passenger more than too feet from the wheel. Of course, if there is no passenger, then the driver must, as I said, shut off the vehicle. Ok it's complicated but the problems could be worked out.
The cell phone manufacturers would have to install a receiver shut down chip into every phone and that would deactivate it though and whether the cell phone manufacturers would install such a chip without a government mandate is not clear....but think of the saving's in lives, insurance costs and lawsuits. What say you???

I think that is a good plan. There is way too much texting going on behind the wheel while driving.

I say take the texting off the phones and make them what they are called PHONES. As far as talking while driving ,all car nowadays have bluetooth that doesn't require touching the phone at all.All 3 of my vehicles have them and they work wonderful. If caught using any hand held devices here in N.S. ,the first time was 600.00 and points.I do believe that they uped it to 1200.00.

Unfortunately this is the only way to stop it.
It is far more dangerous than drinking and driving.
I have been run off the road more than once by texting drivers.
People are far too stupid to not do it so we must look to technology to solve this slaughter on the roads.

I have one of those devices and they work well, still they are a distraction. The problem is someone driving and answering a text, then their eyes are totally off the road. Lets up the fine to 5K

I use texting all the time so that would not be an option. Texting is a good record of what someone said but I do not text in my vehicle period...
