Yes - with the LX-100 it's rather like switching to 3/2 format using a 4/3 camera - some of the pixels are wasted.

Yes, but the full sensor is not used completely in the LX-100 camera. READ THE DESCRIPTION of how it's utilized in the Panasonic LUMIX LX-100.

Here's the blurb they present:

"Big sensor, small camera"

"The Lumix LX100 is the first Panasonic point-and-shoot camera to feature a larger Four Thirds sensor. It's the same 16MP CMOS sensor that can be found in the Lumix GM5, also introduced today. When shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio, resolution is 12.8MP; users can also choose 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios. The top ISO is 25,600, unusual for a pocket-sized camera."

As you can see here, it never actually goes up to the full 16 mp resolution since the transferred data file from the active sensor area is altered to only 12.8mp when aspect ratio is selected instead of the full 16mp. This is why I referred to it as a psuedo-4/3 sensor application.

It's a nice camera, but saying it has the same 4/3 sensor as the other 4/3 cameras is a marketing scheme to be classified and priced in the same category as the SONY RX-100 when it doesn't produce the same 20.2 mp resolution for the $800 price point.

JMHO.
