It's a traditional pier / beam structure . . . and a double steel arch creating a faux suspension bridge.
So, the arches are only for show, not needed for actual bridge support.
Typical "pork barrel" award, as the only ones who benefit from this design are the architect and the builder.

Those are fabulous shots. I first noticed Santiago Calatrava's work was the Milwaukee Art Museum. He is a modern marvel tho' not a inexpensive one. Don

I'm a strong believer in supporting the arts but 74 mil. just for a 'look' kinda boggles the mind. It is sooo 'Dallas' tho.... The dallas mantra is 'new is always better than old - It's what you look like, not who you are - and above all else - It's always about the money'..... The McDermott and Hunt families are real big on wanting to put their 'architectural' thumbprint on the Trinity River Corridor project and 'when money talks, nobody walks'....

Thanks.... True & all indications are that the McDermott span will be very impressive. The Hunt-Hill bridge has actually revitalised an entire neighborhood due to the number of tourists that view it daily from the adjacent Continental Bridge overlook. It's on my 'must do' list for any visiting photogs....

I DO like the design.... I'm just kind of stuck in a kind of 'Cache 22' rationale. Hope you came out ok on the flooding there a few weeks ago...

We are dry... Thanks for checking.
