The Margaret McDermott Bridge under construction. A sister project to the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. These are part of the Trinity River Corridor Project. Ms. McDermott & Ms. Hunt Hill were instrumental in securing the services of Santiago Calatrava as the designer for these structures. After the completed 'Large Marge' came in at a whopping 182 million (about double the projected cost) it was determined that a redesign of the McDermott bridge was in order. The structure going up is projected to cost ONLY 74 mil. There is no easy access to photograph this beast. I parked at the terminus of a dead end street, climbed a levee and walked at least 1/2 mile to reach this vantage point. A beast perhaps but a very impressive one indeed...... To get an idea of the scale, in the 3rd shot, if you zoom in on the 2nd support landing - the orange rectangle is a port-a-potty!

It was originally intended to be (like the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge - see attached) but was redesigned due to budget cuts. It's a traditional pier / beam structure with steel side panels and a double steel arch creating a faux suspension bridge. it's the Dallas way.... it's not who you are, it's what you look like. We may have the greatest proliferation of billboards advertising plastic surgeons and weight loss surgery of any major city in the U.S..

It does not sound bad if you say is reeeeaaal fast and it is someone else's money. Are those high water marks on the portable offices and the shipping container? You did have some rain recently?? A nice series. TFS Cliff

Just something else designed "by committee". We pay for it, right?

I actually like the bridge design. I'm not sure that the aesthetics are worth 74 million. however we do this kind of stuff in Houston also. Your shots are very well taken

Indeed! :) And yes those are high water marks.... Special attempts were made to prevent flooding in this area due to the construction but they still lost a lot of equipment due to the high water. I'm sure replacement costs will be added to the final bill!!! :) :) :) It got a LOT worse elsewhere. In the shot I posted of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, the Trinity is normally less than 20 feet wide at the bottom of a dry levee bottom....

I DO like the design.... I'm just kind of stuck in a kind of 'Cache 22' rationale. Hope you came out ok on the flooding there a few weeks ago...

Kind of like the 'bargain' you get at the furniture store that's always having a sale!
