Old Churches

Love the old churches, here are some I came across in Ireland. Hope you like my lousy photography.

First one is in Stoneyford, Ireland on grounds of Kells Priory. You can see an old church has new uses, both of them very old!

Second one is Innisfallen Monastery in Killarney National Park. Its too bad the Vikings came and plundered as the song goes!

Third one is in the small town of Quin, an old Friary that was built in 1433.

I share your passion of old churches and can boast of taking thousands of photos over the years. Sadly we see many falling by the wayside such as this one in Dublin. I took this photo about three years ago. As you can see, it is now used as a commercial business. There is an irony in that this church once dedicated to Christ "Light of the World" is now "lighting the world."
I'm enjoying your photos.

Thanks Pebbles. Also interesting in your church picture, every lamp pictured has a different lamp on it! I guess it is better that the church be preserved somehow as opposed to being razed.

Did you happen to got to St Michans (sp?)church in Dublin? That was an old church that also had a crypt i the basement, graves in there hundred of years old. We went in there, even touched the three or four hundred old mummy! Due to the content of the soil, the bodies were preserved. It was very interesting.

Yes I did visit St Michan's church but did not visit the crypt. I wish I had now. I've included a few shots I took there.
What did you think of St Patrick's cathedral?

As in St Pats NYC or Old St Pats, NYC? Nice pics. Now that you posted that I seem to remember they had a very small museum inside. We were tired and they were just about closing after we saw the crypt so we did not really look inside too much.

We hope to get back to Ireland next April. This year has been busy so we haven't been able to go. we have our Irish friends staying with us in august, looking forward to it. They treat us like royalty!

I love each picture equally except for the last. Beautiful, awestruck, how old is this church? You know I have to ask; “Where is this church”?

Never mind I read others posts after my message.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello there,

Funny running into you again. Nice photos, not lousy photography. Sometimes you can only work with what is available. I spent some time in Germany, travelling on the river Rhine, and it was a wonderful experience stopping along the way to visit churches and castles that are well over a thousand years old and still in excellent shape. Also, have you had any luck in selling the lens you had posted? Thanks, Tonytee

Hi Tonytee, thank you for your kind words. I just sold the wide angle lens to a UHH member who will be very happy with it when I mail it to him tomorrow. I still have some others, all in great shape including the 70-200. All the best, Bill

Well sir,

Thanks for writing. I really wish I had a need for the 70-200 Nikon lens. I think you are being very generous with the price and also picking up the tab for shipping charges. I couldn't imagine how much it would cost to ship an item that is valued over $2,000.

Anyway, good luck with that.

Well Tony I just shipped my wide angle today and that lens was 1900 although i sold it for 1300. It cost me 75 to ship it three day UPS. I was shocked at the price and only put 1K of insurance on it and I packed it myself. Wow!

Hello,

As President Bill Clinton would say, " I feel your pain." No question that freight charges are no longer inexpensive. It is not like the old days when shipping charges barely warranted an afterthought. Now it is at the top of the list when calculating Cost of Goods Sold. Fuel surcharges are the main culprit. For example, I have close friends in Germany. They pay an average of $11 to $12.00 per liter of gasoline. 3.75 liters is the equivalent of one US Gallon.
This is the reason that there is now a movement for these European Countries to import more diesel, since they will realize much better miles per liter. I am driving a 1994 Honda Civic and I cannot imagine paying approximately $120.00 for a tank of gas. :(((((. Yup, you guessed it, I am a retired accountant. (cheap, cheap, cheap.) Thanks again, Tony
