Plus how much weight do you want to carry. Personally I would go for a 18 to 200/250/300.

When I was younger and visiting either Italy, France or Croatia, I was still using my 5D and the 5D Mark II. I learned that 99 percent of the time, I stuck with my 24-105 plus a 2x converter. I never felt I needed more. Nor did I want to be changing lenses in St. Mark's square or at the Tower in London.

Having toured Italy....I would advise taking a wide angle lens specifically for the many interior and tight street shots that you may take along the way.... as well as your favorite telephoto /zoom lens..

That's a pretty tall order. What type of photography will you be doing?

It seems like a fun idea to limit yourself to a single prime, but if I were going on a trip like that I'd want a zoom.

Okay, got it.

I'm sure you'll get a few replies, but if it were me I'd get an ultra wide. Maybe even a fisheye.

I will assume you actually mean a 6D full frame. I just saw a video by a photographer I admire who is on a world wide trip. he has long touted using a 70-200 zoom for travel UNTIL this trip. he recently made the transition from a 5DmkIII to a leica rangefinder.

he just sat down and analyzed his "keeper" pictures and discovered that the majority of them have come from using a 35mm prime. So based upon his experiences and recommendations I would strongly urge to check into a 35mm lens.

Here is the video if you care to watch -

My favorite prime for walking around is the 35mm.

The 35L - a great choice or the 24L. Both give you wide and upclose options to buildings outside on narrow streets as well as low light / no flash options on building interiors.
