I am planning to do a lot of traveling. I have a Nikon D60 DSLR. It is a pain to carry it around with the kit lenses. Can anybody recommend a good superzoom bridge camera? I have been looking at the Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000cp camera. Does anybody know anything about it? I would appreciate any feedback. I like the Nikon and can get really good pictures with it but it is bulky for travel.
Thanks

Don't get the bridge camera. They all suffer in comparison, in one way or another.

I also do a lot of traveling. I have found that the Tamron 28-300mm fulfills every travel need. Sigma also makes one. There's an APS version as well.

I just got back from a 6week trip. I had a Canon SX50 as a backup. It's a superzoom to 1,250mm (35mm equivalent) but I really didn't need it. Plus, the electronic viewfinder and shutter lag just don't work as well as my Canon 5D, even though the 5D is heavy.

Think about the tradeoffs you will be making....

I have three travel cameras and love them all. The oldest is a Sony RX100 (version 1). Next was the Panasonic GX7 with a 14-140 lens. Last Christmas my wife gave me a Panasonic LX100 that fits between the first two in size.

All three work well for prints to 13x19, even with a little cropping. I also use them for shooting video clips.

If I were to buy a bridge camera, based on reading many posts, looking at photos and watching videos, the FZ1000 would be my first choice.

Look at the new Nikon P900, amazing camera with 2000mm equivalent reach. Hard to find but well worth it!

Look at the Canon powershot G3X. It is the newest and maybe most powerful camera in a new generation of bridge cameras with much larger sensor than the first generation has. I am pretty sure that this is a very good travel camera. See more here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1120052-REG/canon_0106c001_powershot_g3_x_digital.html

The Panasonic Lumix FZ 1000 is also of this new generation of bridge cameras, the main difference between it and the Canon G3X is that the Canon has a much longer reach (zoom). Here is a link for more info http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?N=11057135&InitialSearch=yes&sts=pi

Sony also has a bridge camera of this new generation. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=sony+cyber-shot+dsc-rx10&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ps

And Leica has one as well http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?N=11082916&InitialSearch=yes&sts=pi

And then you should look at the Nikon 1 system. There you can find this same sensor in a compact system camera with various lenses down to f1.2 if you want fast lenses and zoom up to 810 mm full frame vise if you want a long lens. And this is a system that is very compact and easy to bring when travelling. I am using Nikon 1 J2 and like it a lot for fast and accurate autofocus, good stabilizing and small size.

But I think you are on the right track in your search. And do not listen too much to people who tell you to look for something else than bridge cameras, because those new bridge cameras with 1" sensor are not in the same class in regards of image quality as the older bridge cameras who use much smaller sensors and have not been know for anything near a good image quality.

How does a P900 compare in size to a D7100 with a 18-300 Nikon lens as an example? Thanks.

My 1d bodies are plenty heavy and I always take them when traveling. Its a pain, but when I get home and look at the pictures I have never regretted taking them. My wife has a mirror camera that my lenses attach to. The trade off just isn't worth it.

Its very comparable in size to the D3300 and an 18-105mm lens. Smaller than the D7100, and quite a bit lighter.

There are a lot of good bridge cameras. Consider the Nikon P610 and P530, the Canon SX50 and SX60, The Panasonic FZ70 and FZ200, the Sony HV400, and the Fujifilm S1. Between them my first choice would be the Panasonic FZ200 because of the maximum f/2.8 aperture at all focal lengths.

I think a better alternative is an all-in-one lens for your D60. A lens like the Sigma 18-200 Macro or Sigma 18-250 Macro on a lightweight body like a D60 would not weigh very much, and I think it would be better than a bridge camera with its small sensor. Also you can use it if you upgrade your D60 in the future.

Just completed a three week Europe vacation. I had same problem, ended up taking three cameras, a Canon sl1 with 17-55 2.8 and EFS 55-250, a Sony RX10 2.8, and a Sony A7R with 35mm 2.8. I also have a Sony RX100 III, which fits in a pants pocket. I ended up taking the majority of the photos with the RX10, didn't take the RX100 because image quality is not quite good enough and the camera is just too small. If I were to do it over again I would just take the Sony A7r...it produced images that were far superior to the other "travel" cameras. Of course it costs 3 - 4 times as much as the other units.

Thanks. It's smaller than I thought.

When I want to travel light and take good pictures I take my Nikon Coolpix S9500. It has built in VR, 22X zoom. Wi Fi, macro , HD movie capability and with 18 megapixels it takes very sharp detailed pictures. The camera is loaded with features and the good thing is, it fits right in my jacket or pants pocket. It's a great travel camera. It doesn't take the place of my D7000 but it's a great substitute when I want to travel light.
