The park is only open from 9 am to 4 pm. It is patroled by the New Jersey Park Police. I would think you would have contact them for permission to shoot.

There is no open season on black males. There were 6,000 black youths killed last year by other blacks. Why is there no mention of this?
Also if you resist arrest, attack the officer or whatever you deserve to die. If the officer says stop you stop. If he says put hands behind your back do so. Guess what if they are wrong then go to court like humans do and file a complaint against the officer and obey the law. How simple is that. If you resist all bets are off.

I think its all over rated. The last time I was in New York City I just stayed in Central Park, grabbed my sleeping bag, found a nice spot and I stayed there for three nights - never an issue!

There is a special name for people that do what you have here.

If you are that concerned about your safety and keeping your equipment from being pillaged I have a suggestion. Hire an armed security guard from a reputable agency (like Pinkerton, e.g.). I can't imagine that it could cost a huge amount of money to do so and, if you think about it, whatever it costs will be offset by your peace of mind. I imagine it would be very difficult to concentrate on getting great photos if you spend the morning looking over your shoulder for a bad guy.

My wife is a DeGenaro from Jersey City. She might have an uncle out on parole that could provide protection services.

Neither "side" has a monopoly on virtue and both have important issues that merit open and civil discussion. You siding with the police does not facilitate that discussion. Open season on the police is no more right than open season on young African-American men. The only side that should be taken is the right one. We face this issue precisely because of the "circle the wagons" mentality that you feed into and support. If you want to start citing numbers, how about going back to the inception of slavery and adding up how many black lives have been lost at the hands of law enforcement. This is about people doing the right thing. Not about counting the number of wrong things that have been done. Geesus. Your lack of insight is staggering.

There is no mention because it is irrelevant. How many blacks kill each other has no bearing on how many are killed by police officers, both black and white. If you wish to argue it, then you need to post numbers of the number of whites killed in similar situations as opposed to blacks. But that might be difficult, not because there are necessarily less of those situations involving whites, but rather because the police may not be inclined to do to them what they do to blacks.

You see how difficult numbers can be.

How safe is it in Liberty State Park, NY in the wee hours? Especially toward the south end. I know that there are police patrols throughout the night but am looking for some hopefully first hand knowledge. I am interested in getting a time lapse of the sunrise over Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty but to do so I have to be set up and ready to shoot by 3:30 am till 7:30ish. I am assuming that quite a few photographers would use this location and hope that there is at least one there to keep company. :?:

3:30 a.m. sounds scary around any large city. In L.A. that would be suicidal! Just photoshop a moon in. That will not get you killed. Also here the Police might mistake you for a criminal, being up at that hour. LOL

I think it is likely safer late at night in the wilderness with a group of photographers. In CA the Joshua Tree NP is likely safe as well as Death Valley NP. Too far away for gang members and drug deals. Though both places can be too cold or too hot. Good luck, stay safe.

Take a couple of friends or borrow a BIG dog. It can be a pussy cat, but size and breed is a good deterrent to any unwanted company. Better to take a few sturdy friends and pick an open spot where you can be aware of your surroundings at all times. It will dispel the idea that you are lurking to any observer (police.)

Be safe.

From what I have been reading you really have to ask yourself is getting this photo worth all the hassle, danger and discomfort. Unless I was being paid big bucks in advance or at least a good size retainer I would just pass. Did I also read that the park opens up at 9:00? What type of sunrise are you going to get at that time of morning? Sorry I would just pass and live to snap another day!
