Interesting article, but there is one mistake. You cannot download firmware upgrades without registering the camera with Nikon USA. Also, when you decide to sell or trade your Grey Market purchase, the price you will get will be significantly lower than if your item was an authorized import. In 2008 I purchased a new D80 which I later found out was a Grey Market item when I tried to register it. Although I still use the camera and have had no problems with it, when I tried to trade it in last year, I was told that it was worth $75! The camera store guy told me that if it would have been a U.S. model, he would have been able to give me $195! So much for saving a few bucks!

Interesting article, but there is one mistake. Yo... (show quote)

KEH never once asked if my cameras were "Gray Market". I have sold every Nikon camera I've owned to them except the two I currently use.

Not true. You can download upgrades from the Nikon web site without even owning the camera! So if you can do the firmware upgrade yourself, there is no problem with gray market.
