Nikon Gray Market Camera Repair

"The D7100, D610, D800, D810 and D4s DSLR cameras were recently added to Nikon's list of bodies that are authorized for repair in the USA by Nikon authorized third party repair centers. This means owners of grey market bodies now have a means for servicing them in the USA. A reader already checked with the two largest repair centers (APS and C.R.I.S.) and confirmed that both have been supplied with all the necessary info/certification/parts for work on the mentioned models and that both will work on grey market bodies. There are currently 8 centers authorized to work on the D4s and 7 on the D810 - you can see a listing of them on this Nikon page (first select category, model and then you see the list of available repaid facilities):"

Google Nikon Rumors for the link.

I just sent a (unknown to me) Gray Market D7100 to Nikon and they would not repair it!

Nikon 3rd party repair centers are not the same thing as the two NikonUSA facilities in New York and California, and they operate under slightly different rules from those facilities. My local repair shop in Richardson, Texas is an Authorized Nikon Repair facility, but they are only authorized to work on specific Nikon models. For instance I visited them in conjunction with my D300 rebuild a couple of years ago, and while they were happy to undertake that project (with parts that I had located and purchased), they let me know that they were not authorized to work on my D810. In addition to the camera models being added to the list quoted here, my understanding from them is that they will have to complete some training, purchase some minimum inventory of repair parts, and make a commitment to actually take in cameras and do work on them. They may or may not be in a position to make the commitment for all of the camera models, and they may or may not feel that any potential returns are worth the financial commitment required (which may require purchasing additional tools, fixtures, and test equipment), so they may or may not ever show up on the list of folks who repair all of those bodies.

I've never discussed the gray market (US spelling, since this is the US) side of the question with them, since it has never been an issue.

I'm sure that MTShooter will have some additional insight on this, but what I've stated here does represent what I know from first-person discussions with my local facility.

I'm not even sure if there is a repair facility near me any more. Used to be a good one years ago but I think they are gone.
