Nothing you could have done to make it a better shot. It is tack sharp!

You might be able to improve the final print with alternative cropping. The chipmunk should "pop". The whole right half of your crop isn't interesting to look at.

My first suggestion was to try cropping to have the head in the lower right. I tried it and didn't like it. Perhaps just a closer crop. You seem to have the resolution to handle it.

Here's one idea. I used the burn tool to darken some of the non-critter stuff to aid in his "popping".

The first photo has only been cropped and sharpened.
The second is the original shot I took. It too has been sharpened.

Thank you, MtnMan. You have been very helpful. You are right, the chipmunk should pop. I knew something was missing but just didn't know what. And now you have given me some ideas on how to make it pop. My editing skills are pretty limited. I do like your edit and crop. The chipmunk in it has more pop than mine. Now I will go back and do another crop and more editing and see if I can darken some of the other stuff.

I think you did just fine - no improvement required... at least in my opinion.

Have fallen asleep in the woods on a few occations. I would wake up to find I am being watched by a chippy. Make a little movement and boy would I get told off!

Ya gotta love em! For such a small critter they sure have a lot of guts.

Very nice photo.

Both are very nice, Mary. I suppose there's a tension between isolating your subject and showing context, especially when the subject is wildlife. If you wanted to experiment further, you might consider an even tighter crop and then see what you prefer.

Cute pup by the way.
