can you give me a link to Linda_from_Maine's settings. I'm new to the forum and new to the Canon SX50 - so far I'm not very happy with it. I got it so I could shoot in RAW. The quality of my photos are not nearly as nice as those from my Nikon Coolpix which only shoots jpeg. thanks

I have read the manual for the SX50 several times and I find I am still confused about a couple setting and when you would want them "on" or "off".

The 2 settings I wonder about the most are:

1. SERVO AF - my understanding is that when it is "ON" this is the same as selecting "AF-C" mode on a DSLR, and it would seem then that if it is set to "OFF" it should be like using "AF-S" on the DSLR. Is this correct? If not how would you decide if you want it "ON" of if you need it "OFF"?

2. CONTINUOUS AF - If I am understanding it correctly, when it is "ON" the camera is focusing all the time whether you press any buttons or not, and stops focusing when you half press the shutter. When would you want the AF focusing all the time? Wouldn't that just drain you battery faster?

So, would there be a condition where you would want both "ON" or both "OFF" at the same time and why? If only one or the other would be used at any given time, but not both, what situation would you want either ON or OFF?

For shoot birds or moving subjects which setting should be ON, and for shooting things that are still, which settings should be used?

Any help on how to determine which setting should be used, and under what circumstances will be greatly appreciated.
I have read the manual for the SX50 several times ... (show quote)

When I first got my camera, it was recommended to me by people in the DPReview Canon forums to set SERVO AF to OFF
and CONTINUOUS AF to OFF

They were all experienced SX50 users so that is what I did. Seems to work just fine. I think LindafromMaine does the same. But check with her. I use HQ Burst for most action shots but also use Tv mode at times.

In the manual, they seem to be referring to turning the 'continuous' AF OFF, to conserve battery power, as the main reason. I don't know, but I would think the amp draw would be pretty miniscule. The other part I would be more concerned with, is the focus motor, constantly running back, and forth.

Thank you and I will try your suggestions. Do you have any circumstances when you use the "SERVO AF" in the "ON" position? Do you have the "CONTINUOUS AF" in the "OFF" or in the "ON" position in the setting you gave here?

My camera is still set for continuous af = on, but that's just because it's left over from the first year I owned when I was using aperture priority for everything :) The HQ burst mode I mentioned doesn't even offer a choice.

From reading the user guide and others' input here, it seems like if you are shooting anything moving, you'd want both on, and if you think you might stumble onto something moving, even if you weren't planning, you'd still want both on.

If the issue is battery drain, using the LCD for shooting, or looking at the LCD after every shot is the worst culprit :) I get 200+ shots from a battery, and some of those are "no name" cheapies, and I tend to review the pics on the LCD quite often. Oh - and I turned off the "review" feature.

I sent you a PM :)

To view any member's topics, along with every single comment they've made to anyone's topics, click on that user's name in a post, or go to "user list" at top of page and type in the user name. That will take you to their history.

I was wondering about the extra wear on it too.

OOPS. So Sorry. I should have written CONTINUOUS AF to 'ON'. Not off. Our internet service went down and I was unable to correct it until now. I apologize.

If you have your camera on servo, & you're doing still shots I would turn it off, battery life or drain has no meaning with that feature on the SX 50.
