>Here is what a 7D can do

http://juanpons.org/portfolio/

I have met Juan and was impressed by the quality of his work.

I bought a 7D after attending one of his presentations.

i have both the 7d and 5d. the only place the 5d is substandard is autofocussing in lower light situations. so i don't use it in those situations. the 7d is a great camera and the 5d is also a great camera.

if you are looking for 1 great camera, i would recommend the 7d or wait for the 5d mk3 to come out. i am a little disappointed in my 5dmk2.

what you should do before you lay down serious bucks is rent both of them for a day. go to borrowlenses.com and rent both for 1 day. take a zillion photos for that day with both..send them back then the next day analyze them.

i also have an old T1i that i have taken some awesome shots with, but i do have 2 L lenses. i can lay out photos taken with all 3 cameras (if i crop them all the same) and cannot tell which camera took which photos.

up to 800 iso, the 7d and 5d both shoot with a minimum of noise. after 800 iso, is where the 5d kicks the 7d's butt. if i am out with the 5d, i set it on 1600 ISO and shoot in aperture mode...never get a blurred shot.

in low light, even with the L lenses, the 5d takes forever to autofocus. i have sent it back to canon twice, but i read that about the 5dmk2 in just about every forum. full frame is really nice, but the crop factor (1.6) is really nice with a telephoto lens.

the 7d is my personal favorite..and that is just my personal opinion. i am going to look at the 5dmk3 when it comes out and i will sell my 5dmk2 if the mk3 solves that problem and blows me away. if it doesn't, i'll buy another 7d body as my backup and still sell the 5dmk2.

if you have not bought any lenses...........go to a camera shop and try out canon, nikon, sony and pentax. pick the one that feels the best to you...the photo quality is going to more depend on the lenses you buy. the reason i bought canon is because it won the coin toss. i rented a canon and nikon for a few days with comparable lenses.......i couldn't tell the difference so i tossed a coin. canon won. big deal. it really made no difference to me.

but looking at the new 5d mk3 and the nikon d800 specs, i think the d800 would win out for me. i love big megapixels. but i would have to try one out first. a full frame camera with that many megapixels would definitely be an iso noise-buster. i do plan on trying one of those out when they become available......but whichever way i go, the 5dmk2 is going to get dumped.

And therein lies the rub!! As some of us are NOT pros - we can look for the best VALUE {and as previously mentioned - the 5D and 7D have different strengths that play to different needs}. We're talking USABLE bang for your buck! If you lock into a FF body - you CAN'T use lenses designed for crop sensors, whereas using the 7D you get the best of both worlds (for Canon - the EF as well as the EF-S). And certainly any of the top-tier cameras from Nikon, Canon, Pentax, etc will take photos that will max out most of our hobbyist capabilities. If I want to spend the extra bux, I will put it towards better glass. My 7D will probably be the last camera body I need. It is probably more camera than I will ever be able to master.

My sense of the OP's question was - - what camera should I get that will stand the test of time - for the serious hobbyist. For me - that's the 7D. I don't need to get to ISO 25600, and with the dual Digic processors - I get to take 8 mistakes per second instead of only 3 :-)

Just my $0.02 worth - and of course - opinions are like - - belly buttons - - everybody's got one :0 {and SOME have 2 }

I guess I could add that a PRO will probably have BOTH a 7D AND a 5D Mk-II

I own both of these cameras and I LOVE both of these cameras. I am a little perturbed with my 7D right now as it is in the hospital. But, when it is at 100%, it's 8/fps is great for shooting my kids sports. The 5D mark ii great in low light, especially coupled with my 1.2 lens and the bokeh is incredible.
