I read a few years back about collectors of counterfeit Leicas made roughly in that area we used to refer to as COMBLOC. There were a lot of different manufacturers of small lots of varying quality--some rivaling the real thing. People will collect anything.

Converting to a digital body, something like this you mean?...
Now there is a good example. The T90 or "The Tank" as it is affectionately known. Considered by many to the the BEST Canon ever built (I've had four) and still want another.
A good TANK body in excellent function and cosmetics will sell easily for $300. Collectible ... NO! they made thousands of them. Valuable, yes, if you consider what many film camera's of the manual focus area are selling for?
So, what's the question again.
I don't consider them collectible due to the numbers made, but I am making quite a bit of money on certain models.
I hope to actually get one some day. It took 30 years to get a 4x5" field camera. Well, used I might say. The Rollei needs to be in pristine condition to make me happy.

Hey, the one I posted the link to looks quite pristine!
By the way, a lower priced alternative is a Rolliecord, with a Schneider lens. I personally like the color rendition a bit better than the Planar, and the image quality is nothing to sneeze at. I'm a couple of months away from completing my copy setup (too many irons in the fire at present) or I'd post some comparison pictures. I wouldn't mind finding a like-newTele-Rollei myself, but they're uncommon.

They already are. It makes things expensive for those of us who actually use them
not only that, but film cameras, to users, are increasing in price and sales on the secondary market. it is no coincidence that leica has introduced their new film camera the M-A. film is not going away and on the rest of this planet, sans collectors, there are a lot more users, commercial, professional, art and amateur than the digital publications will ever admit.
