I use a D5300 Nikon. I was thinking of purchasing the new D5500. However, I read a few reviews and three of them said that there is not much advantage in buying a D5500 since I already have the D5300. The D5300 has wi-fi and GPS, the D5500 deleted the GPS. Both are wonderful cameras and I like their lightweight.

I just wanted to say "thank you" for all of the very helpful advice, both on the forum and through private messages. I can certainly tell that (well, almost) all of you are fine, helpful, mature-minded people, and appreciate your input.

Nasty little trolls can turn up anywhere....like lice. One bad apple needn't spoil the bunch. Thanks again, everyone!

So happy you stayed.

It doesn't matter if it's simply true. It probably is. By that's not the only standard, in this forum or in life. And don't hide behind "honesty". Rude people use that as a cover.

Not a chance in hell!! Your going to get a load of biased opinion from one brand blinkered people in the main. That is human nature at work.
So now engage brain huh. No one makes a bad camera, the two you are thinking about are excellent and equal in most ways. You have done some research already cos you know about the WiFi so the only differences is slight change in color rendition between Canon and Nikon and how they feel in your hand. Images you can see here and Nikon and Canon sites and how they feel in your hand can be investigated at your local camera store.
Easy huh so please engage brain before asking dumb questions and worse than dumb likely to lead to a very boring thread in which no one learns a damn thing including you.
By the way Im not rude as some will say just absolutely honest and cut through crap quickly.

Well, Billy, I am going to say just that. I have shot with a Canon for years, and ALWAYS wished I had gone with a Nikon. This weekend, I made the big plunge, getting a D7100....waiting with baited breath for it to come in! I realize all my canon lenses will not work on the D7100....but I bit the bullet anyway.

In view of the dumbness of the question I have every faith in this persons ability to live up to that particular claim!

This is absolutely uncalled for....and you ARE NOT being honest....you ARE being very RUDE......!

I hope this helps. I have both nikon and canon and can say that from experience and being novice at one point that the canon is easier to use and understand the menu system. Quality of cameras between the two are equal for what you will be doing. So if you want a shorter learning curve go the canon route. Hope this helps.

Greetings,
Planning on buying my first DSLR camera, mostly for travel and outdoor shots while hiking. Any suggestions? I am purely an amateur, and not very good at that. I am rather partial to Canons, have a PowerShot SX230 HS currently, but am open to any opinions. I have been looking at the Canon EOS Rebel T5i and the Nikon D5500 (which has WiFi, which is a plus). Thanks in advance! Would like to stay under $1000 if possible.

Rsumners, do not let this one post keep you from enjoying the great advice and the excellent photos you will see on this site. I am fairly new to this forum and I have learned so much just by reading advice from other people's questions. As far as cameras go I have a Sony DSLR and I love it. The best advice I can give you is to go to your local camera store and get the feel for the ones your interested in. If you are looking for a store on-line I can highly recommend B&H. They have great customer reps who help you with any questions you might have. There are several other online sources. Spend a few months on this forum and I think you will feel the same as I do. Good luck.

Rich

Sounds rude to me. If you don't like the thread, don't follow it.

Seems like you have 3 major criteria, cost, travel and Wifi. I am a Nikon user and love my Nikon but you might want to look at the mirroless cameras. Sony has the a6000, well under your budget, lightweight, has wifi and is an excellent camera. Several professional wedding photographers I know are now doing weddings with this camera. The Rebel t5i is an excellent camera. You have positive experiences with Canon which will continue. The price is right in the ball park you have allocated. The new t6i is coming which won't make much difference to you other then in keeping the t5i price low. Big win for you.

Many have been booted off, but there is a lot of leeway for free speech. There have been suggestions about having a way to block posts from certain members, but I can't imagine that happening.

Many "hoggers" use the bridge cameras such as the Canon SX50 or SX60 and rate them very highly.. These allow you to do very creative photography, have video and macro capabilities, and have a single lens that zooms from wide angle to a very powerful telephoto. So you do not need to spend money on extra lenses.
