Greetings,
Planning on buying my first DSLR camera, mostly for travel and outdoor shots while hiking. Any suggestions? I am purely an amateur, and not very good at that. I am rather partial to Canons, have a PowerShot SX230 HS currently, but am open to any opinions. I have been looking at the Canon EOS Rebel T5i and the Nikon D5500 (which has WiFi, which is a plus). Thanks in advance! Would like to stay under $1000 if possible.

Seems like a very good price on the T5i, but it's the lenses that will really run into money.
I own a T4i, the best lens I could afford is a 70-300 which I paid $600.00 for.

I know it's wonderful to own a larger sensor camera with changeable lens, but have you considered a in between option such as a Bridge Camera with a fixed lens and high magnification.

I'm now the proud owner of a Canon Power Shot SX60, with which I am very pleased. It has a magnification of X65.

There is also the SX50 bridge camera for about half the price.

Are you planning on outdoor action shots, then frames per second is one factor in a camera.

They should consider the source.

agreed - Billyspad, it's not about the truth or whether or not this same question is asked weekly, it's about being civil, it's about tact, it's about common decency...

when there is an open forum, there are going to be new members that don't know that the question they are about to ask is the same question, maybe rephrased, that had been posted earlier in the week (maybe the same day) - all they know is they have this new-found passion and want to explore it... and here is the UHH, ostensibly with answers...

they don't know about 'search' , they don't know about reading the FAQ's, they don't know that they are about to ask a severely-redundant question...

it's a public forum - I've been a member of public forums for decades, moderated on some, been the 'old guy' on some, been a newb on all of them at one point or another, and on each one I've had to learned each forum's rules and etiquette.... and also had to learn which members to ignore and which to listen to...

no, you didn't gild the lily, but you didn't have to be insulting, either...

rsummers, sorry you had a bad experience on your first post. Most people on here are very nice and there's a handful not so friendly. There will be plenty of people who will help you with your question very soon. :)

Yea, there are some people who are hyper-critical, but not all. There will always be people who believe their camera is better than others. Some cameras are, but a good portion are comparable. Don't worry about that unless you will be shooting for NGO.

Like Billyspad, I also suggest holding various cameras and seeing how the control access feels to you. You'll use the camera more if you feel comfortable with how it feels when you use it. If it feels awkward, it will spend more time on the shelf. Most of the cameras do very well. Mostly, the results are affected by how the photographer utilizes his equipment.

I used a Canon Ftb and AE-1 in the past, so guess what I'm partial to...
My Sony H-1 is horrendously good, but my primary is... a T1i with a Sigma 18-200 since I'm not made of money.

Check some out, pick one, and go have FUN!

Sorry you had a bad experience on your first post on this forum, thats not the usual. Buying your first DSLR is an important decision. There are several brands out there, Sony, Nikon, Canon and others. Nikon and Canon are probably the biggest. I am a Canon man myself, I have a 20D, 7D, 5D mark II and a 5D Mark III. I have been happy with the Canons but have no experience with Nikon. There are some differences in the way there basic modes work (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEnAhkL0i38). If this link does not work, please copy and paste. Once you buy into one system and start buying cameras, lens and accessories it will be harder and harder to change brands. It's a great hobby; I hope you enjoy your photography.

Welcome to the Forum, r. How is it possible to be not very good at being an amateur? ;)

I think the emoticon says it all... a winking eye.... it was just a humorous remark meant to be taken not as sarcastic but as a play on words.

A fellow Pentax user!!! Not many of us about my friend.
In the last 18 months I have bought a house in a country thats very different to UK where I am actually from I have bought a car had extensive work carried out on my house by all sorts of different tradesmen bought many electrical appliances etc. All this without consulting forums of any description.
Why is it so damn difficult for some members of society to buy a camera? How ever do they make the major decisions in life?
I sometime wonder if they wear shoes with buckles or elastic sides cos they have not yet mastered shoe laces!
I hope to replace the battered ol' Pentax within the next 6 months you will not find a Canon or Nikon type question on here from me. I will use the brain my maker gave me and reach a decision like I do about all other purchases.
