I would third the suggestion of Point Lobos. Somebody called it the most beautiful meeting of land and sea in the world. Edward Weston was one of my earliest photography heros, and you can actually see many of the places he took his photos of Point Lobos.

Hi fellow Hogs,
My wife and I are going on a trip in April, that is going to take us up the coast highway. Years ago I lived in Santa Barbara but never took Hwy 1 . I am up for suggestions for places to visit and photograph between Solvang and Santa Cruz. Also any suggestions between San Francisco and Salt Lake. We will have around a week to make the trip, unless I can talk the misses into an extra day or ten (haha). Thanks ahead of time for your help!

Both of the Julia Pfifer state parks are worth your attention. In the Burns section, there is a waterfall that drops directly onto beach. I'll try to find my photos of it. The elephant seal whelping area is also great fun.

Thanks, Paul. We are planning too visit Hearst Castle. I do remember the Patty Hearst affair (Simbionese Liberation Army "kidnapping".She recently showed her dog at Westminster Dog Show, BTW) We will be in LA for 4 days visiting my daughter and college buddy. So much to see and do!! Glad we're retired. Thanks for the ideas. It's so easy to miss cool things!

I have made that trip, or parts of it, at least 25 times. I have never run out of things to shoot and I always get something new. Shooting the coast, with different lighting, and shooting the towns and attractions along the way will take much more than a week, and that's just to SF. (Have never been up as far as you plan.) Enjoy, take whatever you can fit/carry. I like to have my 14-24/24-70/70-200/50/85 with me if I can swing it. You will have soo much fun and enjoyment you won't be able to contain yourself!

Don't get confused. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Pfeiffer Beach are two different locations about 12 miles apart along Hwy 1 in Big Sur. There is also a Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Julia Pfeiffer has a waterfall that lands on a sandy beach and Pfeiffer Beach has the big rocks with holes in them. Both are beautiful and worth a visit. Pfeiffer Beach has no signs on Hwy 1 and is a somewhat obscure turnoff; hard to find. GPS would help. Don't forget Point Lobos State Park south of Carmel for some spectacular scenery.

Isn't there some right wing nut forum that you can snivel in? I just joined UHH to learn and enjoy photography and all you do is go off on a rant that has nothing to do with the topic. Keep your whiney snot to yourself.

We just did this 'Bucket List' trip last year. Seattle back to LA on US 1. Lots of good places already mentioned.

Add Morro Bay, Big Sur & Ragged Point.

If you have time to go north of San Francisco, make stops at Mendocino, Point Arena Lighthouse, Fort Bragg(Take the Skunk train into the Redwoods.) Go north to Leggett to the Drive-thru-Tree. Come back down US 101 to 20. Then you can start working your way east to Interstate 80 & head to Salt Lake. You won't be disappointed.

I saw the comment about the Aliens and thought,
'How come a huge amount of the places have Spanish names?'

But I digress....

In California Bodie and Mono Lake on the east side of Yosemite, if you can get to them. Also I would go to Zion before I would go to Bryce Canyon. Bryce Canyon is spectacular, but Zion has greater opportunity for original photos and creativity. One day in Bryce Canyon pretty well lets you see it. You could spend weeks in Zion and never see the whole place. It is my favorite National Park. There are spectacular peeks and valleys. Beautiful slot canyons. Lots of wildlife and great hiking.

Wow! Thanks to all who have taken the time and effort to comment on my post. Some fantastic ideas and photos. To those who chose to discuss other subjects, you are entitled to your opinions. I believe there are other venues to express them rather than here.

I don't know what time of year you are going. An interesting side trip, although about 20 miles south of Santa Barbara is a boat trip to Anacapa Island. If you are going in the spring when the seagulls are nesting, it is an incredible sight as the island is covered with nesting gulls. The trip will take a full day, so pack a lunch as there are no facilities on the island. The trip itself is not very expensive. It can be booked through Island Packers out of Ventura.

Also, not to be missed further north is Montana De Oro state park near Morro Bay. It truly is a beautiful park.

Enjoy your trip!
